ISLAMABAD: Disgruntled members of the Pakistan Peoples Party lost the battle over the party’s ownership when the Election Commission of Pakistan announced on Tuesday that it belongs to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

However, the PPP for which Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is patron-in-chief will not participate in general elections like it has in the past.

Three factions of the PPP have been claiming rights over the original party name. These three factions, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Ghinwa Bhutto and other members led by Naheed Khan and Senator Safdar Abbasi, all claim legal ownership of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s original PPP.

The ECP had asked all parties concerned to appear on March 25 with relevant proof to back their stances. After hearing the arguments from the parties the ECP announced on Tuesday that the PPP belongs to Bilawal.

The PPP did not participate in the last two general elections because former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf had created laws specifically to keep the late Benazir Bhutto out of the election process. In order to deal with the situation, the party, which was then headed by Benazir Bhutto, contested the election under the name Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP), which was headed by Makhdoom Amin Faheem.

On the other hand, the ruling group which claims ownership of PPP sprung into action and held intra-party elections of the PPP, electing former Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khosa as its Secretary General and former Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Masood Kausar as Information Secretary.

Senator Safdar Khan, PPP MNA Nasir Shah and Naheed Khan have challenged intra-party elections conducted by the PPP, terming them a ‘backdoor deal’.
