KARACHI: Justice (retd) Zahid Alvi was sworn in as the caretaker chief minister for Sindh in an oath-taking ceremony at the Governor house on Thursday, reported Express News.

The oath was administered by the governor of Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad who also approved May 11 as the date for general elections.

Former Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah attended the ceremony in addition to other former ministers including Agha Siraj Durrani, Pir Mazharul Haq and former federal minister Naveed Qamar.

Justice (retd) Alvi visited Quaid's mausoleum to pay his respects.

As he spoke to media outside the mausoleum, he was asked about Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz and PML-Functional having reservations over his appointment. “I can’t stop them. Every citizen has the right to go to court if they think my appointment was unlawful,” he said.

He added, “I think my appointment, according to the law, was correct.”

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had agreed in principle on appointing Justice (retd) Alvi as the caretaker chief minister of Sindh earlier on Tuesday.

Both parties had agreed that Justice (retd) Alvi, a former Sindh High Court judge was a neutral choice and senior-most amongst all the candidates.
