KARACHI:

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) and the Ministry of Industries have initiated a project ‘Supporting Pro-Poor Governance for Legal Empowerment of the Poor (Right to do Business)” in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

Under the project, a baseline study on need and impact assessment was conducted, with the aim of identifying legal services support needs of small and informal businesses, existing mechanisms of support in the public and private sectors for small and informal businesses and to understand the gaps in the service delivery.

Project coordinator Sadruddin Jatoi said though legal services are being provided by different institutions, no independent assessment of their work is available, in particular relating to the marginalised businesses.
