ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission said on Saturday that it will be allotting election symbols to political parties on March 19, 2013.

A press release issued by the commission said that all political parties are requested to send their representative to the meeting at the ECP secretariat in Islamabad.

The ECP said that any party which does not send its representative would then be allotted a symbol in light of the preferences indicated by the party in its application.

The election authorities have asked political parties to file fresh applications for election symbols that will be used to contest the forthcoming polls.

In a press statement, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) directed all those parties that fulfill the provisions of the Political Parties Order, 2002 to submit their requests by March 15.

I have heard that one political party would like to take the symbol of "cat" as on the ballot paper people will not be able to differentiate between the picture of "cat" and of "lion".

Similarly, Ghanwa Bhutto is interested to take the symbol of "sword", as this use to be the symbol of PPP and at a later stage PPP took the symbol of "arrow" instead of "sword".

In my opinion, symbols are important, but the more important thing is that any political party should have roots in the masses and instead of telling to the voters that so and so party has so and so symbol, the voter should know that on which symbol he or she is going to affix the rubber stamp to cast the vote.
