Corporal punishment: Teachers observe token strike

The teachers’ associations would stage countrywide protests if the law was not abolished.

HAFIZABAD: Teachers from the Government High School No 1 observed a token strike against recent legislation suggesting one-year imprisonment and Rs50,000 fine for any teacher who gives corporal punishment to a student. Separately, at a meeting on Friday, Punjab SES Teachers Association leaders Abu Bakr Alvi, Naseeruddin and Naseer Butt called the development ‘foreign agenda’ and an insult to teachers. They said the teachers’ associations would stage countrywide protests if the law was not abolished.
