KARACHI:

A new investigation team was formed on Monday to probe the Abbas Town blast on the directives of the apex court.

The court had previously rejected a report presented by a team of police officials on Friday and had ordered them to form a new investigation team comprising competent and honest officials.

According to a police official, District South DIG Shahid Hayat will head the new team and senior police officers from a number of departments, including Anti-Violent Crime Cell Chief SSP Niaz Khosa, Crime Investigation Department SP Mazhar Mashwani, Anti-Extremist Cell SSP Chaudhry Aslam Khan, Special Investigation Unit Chief SSP Farooq Awan, will be a part of it. The new team has been formed by Crime Investigation Department Additional IG Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh who has also been handling the post of Sindh IGP after IGP Fayyaz Leghari relinquished it.

The team visited the site of the blast and reviewed all investigations conducted on the case. They weren’t able to reveal any new information. “The initial report, which had been compiled by the previous team of investigators, is still being reviewed to further investigate the case,” SP Mazhar Mashwani told The Express Tribune.
