Members of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) thronged Sukkur bypass on Sunday, while burning tyres and shouting slogans to condemn the government and police for arresting members of the party in Jacobabad, Shikarpur and Sanghar.

The protesters were led by the party’s provincial head, Qari Attaullah Rehmani. Rehmani, who alleged that after the recent blasts that occurred in Jacobabad and Shikarpur, the government has arrested members of the party without any justification.

“Police arrested four of our members, including office bearer Syed Zahir Shah, without any evidence after a Shia leader was killed in Sanghar,” Rehmani told The Express Tribune. “SSP Sanghar promised to release them but they were sent to jail on remand instead.” The protesters dispersed after they were assured by government officials that one of their leaders, Syed Paryal Shah Bukhari, would be released from police custody.
