LAHORE:

FIRs have been registered against 40 people for operating illegally at the Bakkar Mandi slaughterhouse in Kot Kamboh.

The Punjab government last year relocated the slaughterhouse to Shahpur Kanjaran, as the one at Kot Kamboh was in a residential area.

Younas Zahid, the deputy district officer (environment), told The Express Tribune that the accused had been burning animal fat to make cooking oil. Some were using tyres as fuel for roasting animal heads and feet.

“It gives off a very foul smell and the process of cleaning animal intestines and burning fat also gives off toxic smoke, which were troubling the nearby residents,” Zahid said. Nawankot police also registered FIRs on the complaint of Allama Iqbal Town officials against three men for slaughtering dead and sick animals at Kot Kamboh.

The men were caught late on Thursday in a raid ordered by DCO Noorul Mengal Amin, in response to several complaints lodged by citizens at his office.

Zahid said that people had been using the open space next to the closed slaughterhouse. He added that others had been acted against for doing so before.
