Out Of School: 1,142 students awarded degrees at SU convocation

A prize of Rs1 million announced for the best student at the convocation every year.

HYDERABAD:

Around 1,142 students were awarded degrees at the convocation of the 2010-2011 batch of Sindh University in Jamshoro on Saturday.

At the convocation, Education minister Pir Mazharul Haq stressed on the need to make higher education accessible to people living in remote districts in the province. He also announced a prize of Rs1 million for the best student at the convocation every year.

“It is often said about Sindhis that they are more likely to be found bantering outside roadside hotels than seeking education,” he lamented. “We need to change this perception.”

The university’s vice-chancellor, Dr Nazir A Mughal, explained that SU is hoping to expand its research facilities. “Around 136 research scholars have graduated from the university in the past three years while 446 students are in the process of completing their MPhil and PhD studies,” he explained. “The university’s faculty has published at least 250 research papers in local and foreign journals since 2010,” he added.
