Results showed 55 per cent of respondents said they liked straight hair, with only 19 per cent in favour of curly hair. 25 per cent said they liked neither. However they did not mention whether they preferred baldness or other hair styles.
Hair straightening treatments are one of the top requests made at salons in Pakistan. Most editorial shoots and runway styling in Pakistan feature models with poker-straight hair; however the trend has changed in recent years.
Gallup Pakistan said they polled 2,748 men and women from four provinces in Pakistan during the month of July.
The survey also showed that men prefer straight hair more than women, as 21 per cent of men declared they liked straight hair, as compared to 17 per cent of women.
Stylist Nina Lotia, who runs a salon in Karachi, told The Express Tribune last month that “everyone from an eight-year-old to a 60-year-old” wants hair straightening.
The bedhead look, teased curls and perms of the 1980s and 1990s made way for smooth, processed hair which saw an increase in hair straighteners being stocked and sold at electronic goods markets and department stores. Salons began offering straightening treatment such as permanent rebonding and now ask clients whether they want ‘straight blowdries’.
