Reconstitution of ECP will postpone elections: Aitzaz Ahsan

Voter registration and correction should be the prime focus of ECP, says Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan.

ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan expressed that election commission should focus on voter registration instead of reconstitution, reported Express News.

He further said, "If the election commission delves into matters like reconstitution of the commission then important issues like voter registration and correction will be delayed and so will the elections. Also members of election commission cannot be removed."

Aitzaz said that the ECP should be left to work in peace and focus on more pressing issues like dual nationality, voter registration and tax payment by parliamentarians who wish to contest elections.

Earlier this week, the political strategy committee (PSC) of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), chaired by chief Imran Khan, expressed full confidence in the chief election commissioner, but called for the fresh appointment of four provincial election commissioners, labeling the existing commissioners as partisan.

On Wednesday PTI joined hands with Minhajul Quran International (MQI) to call for the reconstitution of the election commission. The Express Tribune spoke exclusively to Qadri’s younger son Dr Hussain Mohayuddin who confirmed that the MQI would form a political alliance with the PTI in the future.

Later that day Chief Election Commisioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim held a press conference, explaining that dissolution of ECP will not take place and neither will any member be dismissed.

These demands by MQI and PTI are looked upon as ploys to postpone elections by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
