Dale Steyn struck with the second new ball to secure a 211-run win for South Africa before lunch.
Steyn dismissed overnight batsmen Asad Shafiq and Misbahul Haq inside his first three overs with the new ball to sweep away the last serious resistance by the tourists.
He also took the last two wickets to finish with five for 52 and match figures of 11 for 60.
Wicketkeeper AB de Villiers held five catches to add to the six he took in the first innings.
He equalled the world record set by Jack Russell for England against South Africa on the same ground in 1995/96.
He also became the first player in Test history to make a century and claim ten or more dismissals in a match after hitting an unbeaten 103 in the second innings.
Shafiq's dismissal ended a stubborn fifth wicket stand of 127 with Misbah. The pair added 20 runs to the overnight total of 183 for four in the five overs that had to be bowled before the new ball could be taken.
Only another four runs were added before Steyn had Shafiq caught at second slip by Jacques Kallis for 56 in the third over with the new ball. Shafiq had faced 168 balls and hit nine fours
In his next over Steyn had Pakistan captain Misbah caught behind for 64, made off 167 balls with 11 boundaries.
Sarfraz Ahmed chopped a ball from Vernon Philander on to his stumps and Saeed Ajmal provided De Villiers with his tenth catch of the match when he gloved a lifting ball from Morne Morkel to the wicketkeeper.
There was some frustration for the bowlers as Umar Gul slogged his way to 23 and Morkel was denied a wicket after bowling Junaid Khan when a replay showed he had sent down a no-ball.
But Steyn had Gul caught behind and then trapped Junaid leg before wicket with the fourth ball of the last over before lunch.
The teams meet in the second game of a three-match series in Cape Town from February 14 to 18.
Score:
Pakistan: 49 & 268 (Misbahul Haq 64, Asad Shafiq 56; D. Steyn 5-52) v South Africa 253 & 275-3d.

I am Bangladeshi but i like pakistan from my early childhood. My childhood started with Saeed Anwar's batting with Inzi's style with Waseem & Waqar leathel swing with Suwaib's speed weapons. But the thing is most made me woe the dirty politics behind PCB. I don't know why so many dirty things always burn pakistan camp. But never the team lack of talented players even 10-12 world class cricketer always waiting in bench. Cricket australia and South Africa only can comete with pakistan on the talent. One swift example was Azhar Mahmud. Its a poor example. Whom always keep news of pakistan cricket teams knows there are much more talented cricketers than A. Mahmud in pakistan. But the politics demolish Pakistan social condition as well as other condition. The latest example is cut Inzi from S.A tour and include unknown Rahan Ali in the First test. PCB had not any contact with Aizaz cheema, Tanveer Ahmad or Wahab Riaz who serve pakistan in the full year of 2011-12 session. When India going with so much spirit and nurse their players we threw away our heroes. When India fighting with Australia, S.A and England we fight with Zimbabwe, Afgan (sorry frindz) and Newzland. One man Zaka will not be able to take care of PCB. The other guyz who take thousands of money before full month should be responsible on this little but important things. And the pakistani frendz should express opinion like me where i'm a Bangladeshi. I hope pakistan will gain much more honour in near future and Bangladesh will tour soon when the current indian lover govt changed. May Allah bless you All. Pakistan-Bangladesh Friendship Zindabad
What a poor test cricket performance. I bet our IPL had something to do with it :-D
Pathetic......the team should have arrived in South Africa at least a month before the first match and then got used to the conditions by playing at least 3 practice tests
why is Hashim Amla scoring runs against Pakistan, we are a Muslim country!
Whether Hasim (Amla) wins or Haffez wins, ultimately the ummah wins. God is great.
@jagjit sidhoo
Its not only about Amla's batting but his automatic access to divine blessings that worked for him. For the same reason they will pick Imran Tahir, in case Amla is injured.
steyngun is too hot to handle. For the next match they need to bring in Irfan in place of rahat.
really impressive Stayn.
Practice on bouncy bumpy cement pitches and play fast bowlers, let the ball come on to head, shoulders, chest and neck. Play and practice. Fear of getting hit should be erased if cricket has to be played with pace bowling attack such as of South Africa. Till that time remove players from cricket team who are afraid of getting hit by the ball. Even fielders who pull their hand away and not stop or hold the ball which has been hit by batsmen. If one is afraid he must chose some other profession, maybe work as a butcher in a meat shop, makeup artist, or work in a hair cutting saloon.
@Mustafa: Agree. On these spin-less wickets left armers are more suitable that too the one's who rely on bounce. Ajmal can't be blamed with not a single ball turning.
Notwithstanding the fact that we should take this defeat in an open way considering the fact that our team is in experience, however there few thoughts should be shed on team selection. Starting with Rahat Ali, not originally in the original squad and inducted in the team more of less straight from the flight. Considering the fact that Irfan did not perform badly in the tour opening side match. and was used intermittently, he picked up wickets and should had more physiological impact on Proteas than Rahat had. Number two is the fact that our middle order has monotony in style. All being defensive and cannot be categorised as stoke makers, which is really necessary to break the rhythm of the bowlers. Our middle order goes into the shell, which becomes the catalyst for their demise. What we need is a swashbuckler in the middle order, who can give us quick 40-50 and can break the rhythm. The only person comes to mind, with al his faults aside is Umar Akmal. He is by far one of the better player of quick bowling and has the ability to take quick singles and can hit bowlers across, which gives the players like Azhar Ali, Mishah and Asad Sahfiq to dig in play a long innings without thinking about the making quick runs. We still have ten days till next test match and Umar’s inclusion might not be a bad gamble.
@Rashid: Hasim Amla is one of the top batsmen in the world and no selection committee would think of no picking him .
@Diggvijay Singh: You have been shedding crocodiles tears for Muslims in India for the past few years, however the same did not cut any ice with them but resulted in alienating die hard supporters of the Congress party. You are now trying the same gimmick on a Pak daily but that is not going to help you to win the 2014 elections. You are now joined by Shinde in your band-wagon who too is ensuring a complete rout of UPA. Mr Singh, please carry on as you would be able to devote full time here during 2014 and at least please Pakistanis if not the Indians.
Hope we play Abdul Rahman in the next test . Our regular bowlers were below par.
@Zaid Hamid
I know you are trying to be funny, but its true that BCCI forced South Africans to have Hasim Amla in their team to cancell out any divine advantage that Pakistan had over South Africans.
It's time for some hand wringing!
Pakistan clearly needs more batting power. It's bowlers were also put to shame. So a tough match all around. It all comes back to PCBs management of the talent pool it has. It left out Afridi and Umar Akmal. It prevents it's players from playing in international leagues. It tries, failingly, to bring international cricket back to Pakistan while not looking for an alternate "home" country like England.
Pakistan hasn't played much test cricket. It's players are groomed for the hit or miss nature of 20-20 and ODI cricket. No wonder then, that none of the batsmen have any patience for the long game (Misbah excepted, but he's almost 39 years old and he clearly doesn't have the stamina for the long game either). None of the others can be relied for a mature, hunker down approach. A fifty here a zero the next time only yields heros of the moment.
If only they had played first inn like this, we would have a close game. Anyway, Pakistan can get some positives from the game, most importantly to occupy the crease. Also some one needs to be little aggressive in top order. You can't get respect from fielding side with 5 men in slips throughout the inn. Some aggression would disperse them to far sides of the field to relieve batsmen.
Will fight back...no worries. Come on Team Pakistan.
Pakistan played a respectable second innings. There were some decent half centuries. It's very difficult to cope with South African bowling attack for any batting lineup. Taking the positives out of this loss, Pakistan should look to get back into the Series by winning the next game.
No worries, our team has the potential to make a comeback and atleast, draw the series 1-1
To Beat south Africa in their home ground is big task for Pakistani team but Good fight by Pakistan . Try to win one Test match it's means series win for me .
from top to bottom, not a single player had ANY clue how to play dale styen.
Hopeless is the right here.
