The veteran batsman was satisfied with his team’s performance despite missing the chance to become the first country to beat Australia twice on their home-ground in ODIs.
“It’s tough to get over something like this,” said Jayawardene. “But I think we played some good cricket so we can take something positive from the entire series. I’m disappointed we couldn’t clinically finish the game off and get the series but we’ve done a lot of good things so the guys can be very proud.”
Jayawardene insisted that he may have stepped down as captain but is confident of continuing to play international cricket for a while at least.
“I’m very thankful to the boys and the management. They’ve worked really hard with me in the last 12 months on certain things we’ve wanted to get into the team and I guess we’re heading in the right direction.”
Hughes keen to cement place in all formats
Meanwhile, man-of-the-match Phil Hughes expressed his hope to establish himself in all formats of cricket after scoring an unbeaten 138 that helped Australia avoid a series-defeat against Sri Lanka.
“I’d love to play all formats,” said Hughes. “I’m grateful to crack into the One-Day International team and obviously the Test team and hopefully one day I’d be in the Twenty20 format as well.”
