FAISALABAD:

The city district government has proposed projects costing Rs140 million to convert the ancestral village of Arfa Kareem Randhawa into a model village.

In 2004, she became the youngest professional to be certified by Microsoft. She passed away in January at the age of 16.

Her ancestral village, Chak No4 Ramdewali, has been renamed as Arfa Kareem Nagar and is now being made a model village by the Punjab government to honour her remarkable achievements.

Commissioner Tahir Husain held a meeting at Arfa Kareem Nagar on Friday and reviewed the development projects.  DCO Muhammad Amin Chaudhary, Arfa’s father Colonel (retired) Amjad Kareem Randhawa and officials of the departments concerned were present on the occasion. Among the plans are a monument to be raised near Arfa’s grave, which will include a library and a museum. A girls’ college and a technical training centre would also be set up in the village besides the up grade of schools and the basic health unit.

The commissioner said that a play ground will also be developed, the drainage improved, streets paved, provision of portable water ensured and agricultural equipment and machinery provided to the farmers so that Arfa Kareem Nagar could be made a model village.  The commissioner directed the Parks and Horticulture Agency (PHA) managing director to come up with a landscaping proposal.

Colonel (retired) Amjad Kareem Randhawa thanked the chief minister for recognising his daughter’s accomplishments and making the village a model village.

The first death anniversary of Arfa Kareem Randhawa would be observed on January 14, 2013.
