Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari made his political debut on the fifth death anniversary of his mother Benazir with a raft of promises to carry forward the legacy of the family of martyrs. While he spoke in fluent Urdu and with feeling, unlike his grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and mother, the youngest chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) came to the podium without the weight of experience.
Just a year back, Bilawal had made a poor speech in Urdu. He has, after all, spent most of his life outside Pakistan. But yesterday, it appeared that he has learned a lot since then and his father ensured he was well tutored. He appeared confident, so much so that on at least three occasions he relied on poetic verse to drive his point home. His tone was measured, he didn’t speak too loud and he tried to speak to the party workers instead of pontificate.
The substance of his speech had a strong Zardari flavour. Thus, he sounded more like his father than his mother and he was nowhere close to sounding like his grandfather.
But it would be unfair to expect this much from him.
The young Bhutto promised that he would not abandon party workers – he was not scared of death, rather morbid words but understandable given the family history. Bilawal stood firm in his resolve against extremism, evidenced by double references to the murder of Awami National Party leader Bashir Ahmad Bilour and the attempt on the life of Malala Yousufzai.
Like his father, Bilawal also made two or three factual mistakes. For instance, while paying tribute to Begum Nusrat Bhutto, President Zardari had said, “It was Begum Bhutto who laid the foundation of a politics of reconciliation, for the first time, when Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was in jail.”
It is true that she was the first one to decide to join hands with leaders, some of whom had backed Bhutto’s execution. However, she laid the foundation of the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy in 1981 - two years after Bhutto was hanged and not when he was in jail.
It appeared that Bilawal drew heavily from his father’s speech last year in which the president had criticised the judiciary. Without naming the Supreme Court or the chief justice, Bilawal asked about the fate of the Bhutto reference and Benazir’s case. The poor boy should have been briefed about the Bhutto case by Aitzaz Ahsan and the Benazir case by Rehman Malik and Farooq Naek. In fact, he should have asked his father why Benazir’s suspected killers and conspirators had not been arrested yet. Why had Musharraf not been brought in with Interpol’s help?
If one compares Bilawal’s political debut to that of Benazir’s, she was luckier on many fronts. She received her political training from none other than Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who always took her with him on foreign tours, including the one to Simla, and introduced her to former Indian premier Indira Gandhi. Benazir was even allowed to give interviews to Indian journalists.
Benazir’s political maturity was, in part, forged by her father’s meteoric rise. It was hammered home by the gallows. It was hewn by the hundreds and thousands of arrests, imprisonment and hangings. It was chiseled by her experience leading the party with her mother from the front.
By the time Bilawal was born, Benazir had already won an election and coined the slogan, “Democracy is the best revenge”.
Bilawal was just a boy when Benazir lost her first government and he was still young when she lost her second government. As a child he saw his father in jail and his mother fighting cases. He was old enough to be aware of the brutal murder of his uncle, Murtaza Bhutto, and that too during his mother’s tenure in 1996.
To her credit, Benazir did not hide from Bilawal why his father was in jail and why one of her closest party men, Farooq Leghari, sacked her government. During the takeover, she schooled her son in the differences between Zia and Musharraf as dictators - and why she was not as harsh with the second given the politics of reconciliation. Bilawal spent the 11 years of Musharraf’s reign in the UK, concentrating on his education.
He watched as his mother was attacked on her homecoming parade on October 18, 2007. He saw her soldier on.
And because of December 27, for him the political became the personal.
Bilawal’s debut comes not at a time when the politics of ideology prevails, as it did in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s. As his father has demonstrated, today is the politics of adjustment, reconciliation. It is also a very different security climate. Bilawal may not be able to lead rallies as his mother did.
His test lies ahead, in the next few months, when the PPP readies for the elections. He will have to come into his own, speak his own mind. He will have to make his own politics.

@Conspiracy Theorist: You mean just follow what establishment says; and establishemnt is Pro-Punjabi.
You know that something is really wrong with the chairman of PPP when the media is concerned more with his Urdu diction than the actual content. And considering the audience, he should have prepared his speech (or at least parts of it) in Sindhi to make it more relatable.
I feel sorry for Bilawal, he shouldn't be dragged into something he clearly isn't prepared for or meant to do just because of his lineage - it's not just undemocratic, it's an unnecessary risk for the kid (history has proven that nothing has benefited the PPP more than a 'martyred' Bhutto). I hope he gets the courage to walk away for his own sake, get a good education and live a comfortable life away from this drama of lineage politics which undermines whatever's left of democracy in this country.
Bilawal Bhutto has had an excellent education, like his mother, he has been aware of Pakistan's politics from a very young age with the ensuing suffering, just as she lost her father under extreme tragic circumstances, he too has suffered greatly, as his father, jailed yet never convicted under the rule of law... His coming out speech could not have been better, more humane, and well expressed. Give him his due - I am sure his star will raise very high. Regardless of pundits pontificating the contrary, his promise to fight terrorism, dictatorships, and follow the causes that were close to heart for his mother and grandfather, if the powers that be do not interfere in politics as has always been the case sadly for the population, Bilawal Bhutto will go very far I am sure...
Most educated persons in the world and in South Asia are ( with a bit of effort) able to deliver speech in at least 2 languages~~~~Urdu is not such a difficult language for an Oxonian to master.
excuse us while some of us throw up!
'His mothers language, his father's words'...nothing original. Certainly not the makings of a true Leader...
Its pity that our people's vote are using against them.. We don't want the specific person to head the state but we didn't have any say. Political Parties are like new kind of Dynasties in which one head died his or her blood relative take his/her place.. They call this democracy its not democracy its hypocrisy.
Until we can have education, we will never have good leaders elected through democracy. The political parties will never let this happen, as this will erode their voter base and hence power. This can clearly be seen in both the rural and urban centers of the country where voting is due to "Bradri" and "Ethnicity" rather then the character & past performance of the candidates.
The military dictators did not let this happen as people would then have objected to their rule and may have risen and demanded democracy. A chicken and egg situation here. As an individual we should all try our best to work for this country and pray to Allah for a positive change for this country.
let us eradicate poverty and spread education, these families will be disappear
While Bilawar has lot to prove in coming months and years, during his speech he vowed not hesitating any sacrifice for the nation of the Pure. To begin with, I ask him to sacrifice encroachment of 6-lane street right in front of Balawal Complex. Lets talk about other sacrifices later.
Kazim Muneer Karachi
i think they (ppp) are moving towards their downfall, what they did in these 5years of government they have to pay back,i was not impressed with any of his speech, since its time to do something practical than only corruption..
pakistan belong to people of pakistan not the few families of pakistan. speak for a change
What was the speech? It was nothing but the same old PPP rants, no one cares. It's best if he goes back to London and enjoy the night life. He has no place in Pakistan.
Poor choice! The Bhutto's need to think about the tragedies that have been inflected on the family. He can serve human kind in lot better ways rather then eying the Presidency/PM.
His mother’s language, his father’s words and whose corruption ? I am not holding my breath on another dynastic scion making any difference.
If only we did not have toady politics in Pakistan, then some people outside of the big mafia families could be elected.
Zardari boys please let the dead rest in peace, stop building your political future on their graves. A Zardari can never become a Buhtto.
well delivered speech by bilawal.first anti ppp people used to criticised bilawal 4 his poor urdu.now when he has delivered excellent speech in urdu , they can't digest it either. my family vote has been andwillalways be for bhutto's. at least someone has the guts to stand up against the terrorist unlike other taliban apologists likePML and PTI. all the best to bilawal bhutto. Allah give u the strength to fight 4 the rights of downtroddeb ppl. JEAY BILAWAL BHUTTO BENAZIR.
@All who are supporting Bilawal
Please put this homeland before your native language, before your province and before legacy. Think nationally, rationally and above all think what these politicians has given us. Choose humble, able and honest leaders, regardless of their race, language or religion. Choose them in elections or without elections.
These family politicians should be ashamed of saying the word "democracy"
It is very true that People of Sindh still have deep respect for ZAB and BB Shaheed and they also see Bilawal with great respect because of the sacrifices of her family. Having said that people of Sindh are also not unaware of fact that current PPP led allied Govt has giving nothing to people of Sindh but poverty, inflation, poor law & order, violence, politics of hate, poor rehabilitation post floods and above all anti Sindh LG system SPLGB. If PPP under Zardari leadership continues on same path of anti people policies in Sindh, Even Bilawal cant win back popular support of people of this province.
How is he a Bhutto ? He changed his name after his mother's assasination. Immature speech not knowing who to blame.
PPP supporters are the best judges who their party leaders will be and they are united to welcome Bilawal. Opponents can shut their mouth once for all. Further PPP supporters are more mature politically than any other party and able to make right decisions.
Pleeeeease!!!!!!! give us a break.
Bilawal sahib , just get the road from larkana to sukkur built, then talk else.
BB's killers are already in the custody. The case is being prosecuted. However, most of us forget the fact that the crime site was washed by Musharaf's cronies and most of the evidence is circumstancial. In such a situation how can one expect a strong prosecution?
Also the prosecution has been requesting hearings on day to day basis since a long time, as done in many other important cases. Either the case isn't important or probably the Honourables are busy making the game plan for politicking.!!!
For a first speech 9 out of 10.
A new star is born. Having Bhutto blood, Pakistani people just like his mother or grandfather either to love him or hate him, but almost none dare to ignore him. That is the sign of a great leader.
Why is this kids speech being splashed on the front pages of newspapers even tribune? It seems the so called liberal media is still a slave after all.
Don't know why people are beating on Bilawal Bhutto. If people don't like him he will not get elected if they do he will - this is democracy. If you dont like him by all means dont vote for him. As far as I am concerned I will only ever vote for PPP or ANP.
As far as Bilawal blaming the Supreme court I think he has the right. Since the PPP came to power the SC has gone out of its way to create hurdles for it even sending a democratically elected PM home on some BS charges. Mind you these are the same judges who were completely quiet during the 10 years of Musharraf's rule.
Again with the "roti, kapra, aur makan". Yes, we get it, that's the PPP slogan, full of empty promises. The current PPP government was unable to meet these promises, what will make the Pakistani people think that the the amature politician can meet them?
We also get that he is Benazir's son and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's grandson. The repetition of these facts in his speech was getting a little monotonous.
Lastly, it clearly seems the boy does not have an inkling of the REAL situation in Pakistan or he wouldn't boast about the "education" and "healthcare" given to the people of Pakistan by PPP.
Disappointed with the Oxford graduate's bland, boring and unimaginative speech.
If like his predecessors he too is as ill-informed as his speech reflects about the prevailing condition of the country and her people then the TEST lying ahead is not his,its ours
Now some will still vote for him just because he delivered the speech in urdu. We don't deserve democracy.
One would expect a less biased analysis by Mazhar Abbas since he was there to witness Benazir's rise. BB shaheed did not know Urdu when she came into politics. Bilawal on the other hand did do an excellent job since there were few grammatical errors (the typical singular-plural helping verbs and gender).
The speech was very much BB's as opposed to the President who often by-passes mention of PPP comrades like Taseer and Bhatti while Bilawal made it clear that the PPP continues to stand with the masses.
These family politicians won't forgive us.
My dear Bilawal, please leave us alone. This is 21st century and Pakistan is not a kingdom transferred from father to son. Please please please --- Go back and complete your studies and become an accompalished person based on your education and acheivements, not on the dead bones of your mother and grandfather.
Just heard the speech. It was most ridiculous speech that did not make any sense. Why is Mr. Bilawal blaming SC for not punishing Benazir's murderers. How is that SC job? If PPP cannot prosecute , this is their failing ( Aitzaz is right). Who was in power for last five years? Who summoned UN commission despite domestic objections? Based on these facts, his allegations are baseless rhetoric to mask their miserable failure as a ruling party.
It seems like victim-hood & being opposition is PPP's DNA. They just know how to cry foul even when they are in power. They have absolutely nothing to show & nothing to run elections on. In my opinion PPP is dead unless they change their way. They cannot thrive on slogans about dead people.
My whole family liked PPP because of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto....but not any more. I think its time for us as a nation to build basic political infrastructure and get out of "KHANDANI SIASAT". I think its time to change course of our great nation towards better future of our coming generations. Leadership should evolve from among us. From our streets. I request you my brothers and sisters to bring change in our ideology. Choose PTI. Test them. Get rid of them as well if they don't deliver as promised. We owe at least this much to our great nation.
Just don't waste your time and vote on already tested low life career politicians.
