ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari formally approved on Tuesday the appointment of Major (retd) Malik Asif Hayat as the new chairman of the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC).

Hayat will replace Justice Rana Bagwandas, the noted jurist who retired on December 14 after completing his tenure. Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said that according to the rules, it is the prime minister who advises the president on the appointment for a three-year term.

In this case, PM Raja Pervez Ashraf proposed Hayat for the post because of his rich and varied experience in the military, police and civil service.
