Waiting behind Ashraf for the main gate of the Minar-i-Pakistan complex to open was Ghulam Murtaza in his 2011 model Toyota Corrolla. Murtaza, a textile exporter from Faisalabad, said he also wanted change. “I can’t deliver goods to my clients abroad in time. There is always a delay either because of power outages or gas shortages. Businesses can’t be run in this manner.”
Hafeezur Rahman, who has a property dealing business in Lahore, said besides fighting corruption, his support for Tahirul Qadri was also because he wanted a solution for terrorism and poverty. “I don’t lack the basic necessities of life. But I know there are others who do and I support Maulana sahib because he wants to work for them.”
Rahman added that he refused to deal with anybody who was corrupt. “We don’t work with the Lahore Development Authority. They are corrupt,” he said. “Defence Housing Authority, Bahria Town and other such housing schemes have transparent procedures,” he added. His brother said he would vote only if the contestants were pious people. “We will not vote for rapists, drunkards and people who sell and purchase plots on fake documents,” he added.
A group of women waiting for their bus to leave the parking lot said they had come to attend the meeting from Bahawalpur. They said they were members of Minhajul Quran but added that they did not know much about the content of Qadri’s speech. “Our men know about these details,” they said.
A group of Sikh visitors came to the meeting under the leadership of Gayani Ranjeet Singh, who is a garanthi at the Auqaf Department and based at the Gurdwara Dera Sahib opposite the Minar-i-Pakistan. He said he was representing all the gurdwaras of the country.
“A government guided by any religion cannot be a bad government. Our country will overcome its crises if it is run in accordance with religious teachings,” he said. He cited terrorism, poverty and illiteracy as some of the major problems Pakistan was facing.
Other religious figures present at the meeting said they had cordial ties with Qadri and had come on his special invitation. Sain Makhdoom Syed Chan Pir Qadri, the custodian of the Mian Mir shrine, said he will would for the speech to finish and then comment about its contents.
Pir Sarkar Jee, the custodian of Astana Alya Gulshanabad Sharif in Rawalpindi, said he had come to support Qadri’s struggle for the supremacy of Islam. He said he was affiliated with Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (Hanafi Barelvi) and added that his organisation opposed all kinds of sectarianism.
Zulfiqar Ali, a Minhajul Quran member who was volunteering at the rally, said the organisation was preparing for the day for almost one-and-a-half month. Ali, a textile businessman from Lahore, said youth, women and traders’ wings of the Minhajul Quran had coordinated their efforts for the arrangements.
He said the compound was split into enclosures for people from different segments of society. The two main divisions were for men and women, gathered at the right and left sides of the main stage respectively.
People were seated in the front half in accordance with their professions. The main divisions were for foreigners, politicians, scholars, naat khwans, lawyers and education sector professionals. The ‘general public’ was gathered behind these main divisions.

Dr. Tahirul Qadri is a prominent religious scholar . He may be sincere with honest intentions for the betterment of the country. But these traits are not enough and like all other religious scholars, the governance and economical development of a country is an area unknown to them .Also in political arena ," religious leaders are the guardian and protector of the interests of common people" : is yet to be proved in any country.
"They must find it difficult... Those who have taken authority as the truth, Rather than truth as the authority." by -G. Massey
MashAllah any schooled person can see that Tahir ul Qadri saab is speaking Haq..
Dr Qadri has taken a step towards much needed change. Please support it so that this nation may see a bright future.
Those who know him closely, and not through tempered propaganda clips spread against him, they know that his vision and leadership abilities are immense. He is not a typical molvi. He fully understands the challenges of the modern world and has done a full homework for its solutions.
His demands are real and as a Pakistani we have the right to expect the Government to ensure all the laws listed in the constitution for a free and fair election are met and practiced for the upcoming elections. It doesn't make a difference to a common mans household at least in Pakistan that if the election is happening or not. I don't care who is the President of Pakistan because I am convinced that whoever it is, he won't bring no good to my life. Dr. Tahir Ul Qadri is a spoke person for me and millions of us.
Ha, if Qadri is so sure that religious leadership will benefit Pakistan, why was he sitting in secular Canada all these years?
Mr. Qadri, your Fatwa that "The country will prosper under a religious leadership" dies there n then when we look at existing so called Pakistani Religious Leaders (including you). Some live on Mazar's income, others running terrorist dens like Madrasas (unfortunately madrasa basic concept has been corrupted by leaders like you). Please do us (180-million) a favor n leave field of politics to politicians, you just sit, study n correct firstly your own selfs n secondly what people like you have done to Masjids, Madrasas, stop exploiting religion, corrupt practices on the name of religion/sect than stick to your designated field of expertise. We assure you 180-million are ready to take law in their own hand to teach politician n corruptors at it's right time.
Tahirul Qadri: "The country will prosper under a religious leadership"
Any evidence or basis for this assumption , Tahirul Qadri Sahib ? None at all . On the contrary there is overwhelming evidence against it . Every Muslim country in which religion became a dominant political factor . it sank into anarchy and chaos . Examples ? Afghanistan under Mulla Omar/Taliban , Iran under Ayatollas , Somalia collapsing as a state wracked by militants like Shabaab , chaos and bloodshed in Nigeria caused by Salafists Boko Haram , Sudan under Omar al-Bashir , last and for us the foremost , our beloved Pakistan , being wrecked and decimated by militant Islamists . The obvious conclusion ! In modern times only a secular state under secular leadership is viable . Bringing religion into politics---witness experience of all countries , is opting for anarchy . Religion should prosper as a private affair of an individual .
I beg to differ Mr. Qadri. Leadership isn't all that is required for a prospering nation. Many other factors count in.
On another note a religious leadership is the last thing we need. It is not the job of religious clerics to rule a nation.
