KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to remove encroachments, including temporary steel cabins that were allowed by the previous city government, from all roads in the city within three weeks.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Muhammad Yasmeen and Mustaqeem, who complained that the city government was not issuing them licences for establishing the temporary cabins.

The men claimed that they use these cabins for running poultry and pan shops on Abdul Hakeem Road, near Frere Market. In 2004, the then-city government had passed a resolution that allowed the placement of these outlets. The petitioners claimed that the authorities had still not given them new licences. However, KMC’s law officer S Sultan Ahmed told the court that the petitioners and many others were conducting business through these cabins.

Encroachment

“The KMC Council has passed a resolution for removal or demolition of such encroachments,” the officer told the judges. Disposing of the petition in KMC’s favour, the SHC bench directed the corporation to start a campaign to remove encroachments.

The law officer was directed to report to the court’s inspection team within four weeks.
