LHC demands progress report on 15th

The court earlier constituted a 15-member committee, comprising police officials and lawyers, to solve the problems.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday ordered the capital city police officer (CCPO) and the chief traffic officer (CTO) to ensure one-way traffic on Turner Road, remove encroachments, and take firm action against violators.  Justice Hafiz Abdur Rehman Ansari also asked the CCPO and the CTO to submit a compliance report by September 15.

The court had earlier constituted a 15-member committee, comprising police officials and lawyers, to solve the problems.

The court is hearing a petition moved by Muhammad Wasil Khan, through his counsel Alamgir Khan, against traffic problems on Turner Road situated south of the LHC building, and the encroachments that have mushroomed on the sides of the road causing constant inconvenience to court visitors.

The lawyer pointed out that disorderly traffic had become the norm on Turner Road due to the inefficiency of the traffic police; it was supposed to be a one-way road but no commuters seemed to be respecting that rule.

He added that the vendors and makeshifts shops on either side that encroach upon the road also cause inconvenience to lawyers, especially those whose offices were located there.

The petitioner requested the court to issue directions to the authorities concerned to take action against encroachers.
