In Court: Thatta resident demands right to education

Noor Muhammad says a girls school in his village was shut down by education officals.

A resident of Ali Nawaz Jalalani village in Thatta district has taken education officials and others to court for closing down a girls’ school. He argued that education is a basic right of every citizen under Article 25-A of the Constitution.

In a Sindh High Court (SHC) petition, Noor Muhammad cited National Commission for Human Development chairperson, the district coordination officer and the executive district officer of education for Thatta as respondents.

On Thursday, the SHC asked the Sindh Bar Council and the Sindh High Court Bar Association to nominate a few lawyers who have insight on public interest litigations, especially in reference to right of the education and establishment of schools, as provided under the Constitution.

The petitioner told the judges that the National Commission for Human Development set up a girls’ school in their village, which had a large number of students.

Meanwhile, the provincial law officer was directed to file comments before next date of hearing.
