Checking contamination: City govt directed to recycle solid waste

PHC tells officials to replace all rusty pipelines to ensure clean water, check leakages.

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday directed the city district government to contact any company interested in purchasing solid waste for recycling.

The court also ordered to replace all rusty water pipelines so that pipes passing through contaminated water canals do not carry infected water into homes.

The tehsil municipal officer (TMO) for Town II informed a PHC division bench hearing a suo motu notice that the process to change pipelines is underway. The bench was headed by Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Waqar Ahmad.

The TMO said that the canal carrying water near Pajagi Road was contaminated by sewerage lines, which were directly dumping human waste into the water.



The bench directed the officials concerned to immediately make alternative arrangements for people living in the area to ensure that the water being supplied remains pure.

Peshawar Development Authority Director General Qazi Laeeq informed the court that the sewerage treatment plant at Hayatabad is out of order and additional funds have been allocated to build another plant on Charsadda Road. The bench said the process should be expedited and the plant be completed as quickly as possible.

The bench told the TMO to personally visit the Tehkal area to ensure all leaks in the pipelines are fixed and the water being supplied is safe. He was also told that the court’s inspection team will visit all the areas after a month.
