LAHORE:

A committee has been formed to make a new medical college in Bhakkar, recently approved by the chief minister, to prepare a feasibility report for the project.

This was stated by the Special Assistant to Chief Minister Punjab on Health Khawaja Salman Rafique on Wednesday.

The proposed name of the college is Thal Medical College.

Prof Dr Javed Akram, advisor on medical education, is the convener of the committee. Other members include Mayo Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Zahid Pervaiz, the Bhakkar DCO and the EDO (Health) and the Health Department’s Chief Planning Officer.

Rafique said that the health secretary had constituted the committee so the college could start functioning from the next academic year, 2013-14.

The committee will identify a building in the district where the medical college can be set up temporarily. It will also identify land for the construction of a new building. Rafique said that the PML-N government had established five medical colleges in Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan and Lahore during its tenure. He hoped that the Government Amiruddin Medical College, PGMI would start offering MBBS classes from January 1, 2013.
