SHABQADAR:

The provincial government has informally contacted Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) opposition leader and former chief minister Akram Khan Durrani for the caretaker setup in the province.

Talking to The Express Tribune at the residence of former parliamentarian Hameed Khan, Durrani denied having any formal meeting on the subject with the ANP-led government.

Durrani said the provincial government was looking at the federal government’s approach towards the interim setup, because of which no formal consultations have been initiated. “After formal contact, I will be in a position to talk to all the leaders of my party and other opposition parties to unanimously nominate a caretaker chief minister,” he added.

He further said that consulting the Leader of the Opposition for the caretaker government has become mandatory after the 18th Amendment.

Regarding election preparations of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Durrani said the party was contacted by different parties for an electoral alliance, but already has a clear stance on preferring only religious parties.

He termed the incumbent ruling party’s statement about a possible alliance with JUI-F “their personal opinion,” adding that JUI-F has sought suggestions from district chapters of the party in this regard. “JUI-F will make a final decision after we get all the proposals,” he added.

He said that a provincial committee will be formed to decide electoral candidates in the province, adding that the same body will also verify facts for deciding genuine aspirants.

About the ongoing politicking, Durrani said the campaign to woo key political personalities was at its peak in the province. “The JUI-F is an ideological party,” said the former chief minister, implying that only those who relate to its salient features will be inducted in its ranks.

Durrani lamented that the provincial government had failed to deliver on all fronts, with K-P passing through a critical stage because of the ongoing militancy. “We also need to hold talks. The US is now using the same policy in Afghanistan.”

He expressed surprise over the reluctance of the government in this connection and termed dialogue the key to restoring peace in this region.

The JUI-F has formed a Jirga to discuss the restoration of peace with tribal elders, he said. Durrani also expressed condolences to Baber Ali over his father and former provincial minister Muhammad Ali’s demise.
