KARACHI:

The city’s main transporters union heavily criticised CNG station owners for closing down for up to 72 hours at a time, which has brought public transportation in the city “on the verge of collapse”.

The Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI), an alliance of 14 public transport owners’ organisations, also alleged in a statement issued on Friday that some CNG stations were charging an extra Rs300 from minibuses and coaches.

“If such activities continue, then there will be no public transport left on the streets for the 20 million people of Karachi, and the government will be entirely responsible for such a situation,” said KTI president Irshad Hussain Bukhari and general secretary Mahmood Afridi.

KTI has also decided to call an “urgent” meeting of its members on Saturday (today) to devise future strategy for transporters, keeping in view the frequent and prolonged closure of CNG stations.

The KTI leaders also appealed to the government and the apex court to take notice of the situation.
