Facilities in jails: SC seeks detailed report by Jan

Sarwar told the court that all was not good, especially health facilities available for heart and liver patients.

A division bench of the Supreme Court on Friday sought a detailed report about the medical facilities provided to prisoners in Punjab jails by the second week of January, 2013. It also sought details of problems, that the prisoners faced and recommendations to improve health facilities.


The bench issued the directions during a suo motu proceedings initiated on the letter of a prisoner Mukhtar from Central Jail Kot Lakhpat. Inspector General (Prisons) Farooq Nazir and President Lahore High Court Bar Association Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry appeared before the court on Friday. Nazir submitted a report regarding facilities provided to the prisoners in jails.

Sarwar told the court that all was not good, especially health facilities available for heart and liver patients.

He said that due to lack of medical facilities many prisoners had died.
