KARACHI: Delimitation of constituencies should not only be confined to Karachi but must be extended across the province, said Sindh Assembly speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro.

During a press conference at the committee room of the assembly on Tuesday, Khuhro said that the delimitation of the constituencies would not make any differences in the number of Sindh Assembly seats, which had been increased from 110 to 168 during the 1998 census. “Assembly seats can only be enhanced if a census is carried out,” he said.

According to him, the constitution allows a minister who resigns from his portfolio to become a minister again, provided he ensures his re-election within six months. Apart from one minister of the Awami National Party, Amir Nawab, all the resignations of opposition ministers have been accepted, he said.

The speaker said that the chief minister has the authority to appoint ministers in his cabinet for six months, referring to the deposed MPAs who have been reappointed. “Not only the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), but earlier governments had also appointed ministers and later announced the election schedule to elect them within a period of six months,” Khuhro said.

Referring to the construction of Kalabagh Dam, Khuhro said that it was not the PPP government that supported the dam during a Council of Common Interest meeting, but it was the then chief minister Jam Sadiq.

Appreciating the efforts of the law enforcement agencies, Khuhro said that they have started raids in troubled neighbourhoods. “It is the duty of law enforcers to take action against those who display arms, despite the ban,” he said.
