By-polls for 2 National, 7 provincial assembly seats underway

By-elections for two constituencies of the National Assembly and seven constituencies of provincial assemblies are in progress, Express News reported on Tuesday.

Polling started at 8am and will continue till 5pm.

The National Assembly constituencies are NA-107 Gujrat-IV and NA-162 Sahiwal-III.

The provincial assemblies constituencies include one for Sindh Assembly - PS-21 Naushero Feroz-III and the others are for Punjab Assembly - PP-26 Jhelum-III, PP-92 Gujranwala-II, PP-122 Sialkot-II, PP-129 Sialkot-IX, PP-133 Narowal-II and PP-226 Sahiwal-VII.

Voting at some stations started late as polling staff failed to reach on time.

Authorities have declared 59 polling stations as sensitive. Police and Rangers have also been deployed near certain stations to maintain law and order.

After firing incidents, few of the polling stations were closed.

NA-162 Sahiwal-III

Around 11 candidates are contesting for this seat, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate Chaudhy Zahid Malik and the joint candidate of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League - Quaid (PML-Q) Mehar Muhammad Ali Kathia and independent candidate Rai Hasan Nawaz.

NA-107 Gujrat-IV

The constituency is considered a stronghold of Pakistan Muslim League - both Quaid and Nawaz - and comprises Sarai Alamgir, Kharian Cantt and urban and rural areas of tehsil Kharian of district Gujrat.

PS-21 Naushero Feroz-III

The number of voters in the constituency is 119,884, out of which 54,711 are female voters and 65,173 are male. Around 129 polling stations have been established with 325 booths. This seat has fallen vacant after PPP MPA Dr Ahmed Ali Shah resigned for holding dual nationality.
