The Sindh University (SU) administration, led by Dr Nazir A Mughal, will have to brace for another year of hostilities given the verdict of the teachers’ elections on Thursday.
SU Teachers’ Association (SUTA) have been demanding Mughal’s resignation since January and now the same people have won the elections. With Mughal’s arch enemy, Dr Irfana Mallah, as the new president and Dr Azhar Ali Shah as the general secretary, Mughal is likely to face tough times ahead. In the previous setup, Dr Mallah was the general secretary and Dr Shah was the president.
Similar to the last time, the two were contesting from separate panels with their candidates fielded againt each other. The Mughal-backed Pro-Academic group was wiped out as four of the executive seats went to Dr Shah’s group and one to Dr Mallah.
According to the election committee chairperson, Dr Muhammad Khan Sangi, 575 teachers were registered to vote for the posts of president, vice president, general secretary, treasurer, joint secretary and 14 members of the executive council for one year.
Dr Mallah had warned earlier that, “the movement against VC Nazir Mughal will continue if we win the elections”.
