Afghan girl’s throat slit over refusal to wed
The girl was carrying water from a river to her village home in northern Kunduz province on Wednesday when she was murdered, police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told AFP.
“The two men attacked her and slit her throat with a knife,” he said. “They were arrested and are in police custody.”
Hussaini said one of the suspects had proposed marriage to the girl but her family had rejected the offer.
Extreme violence against women and girls remains a major problem in the conservative Muslim nation more than a decade after US-led troops brought down the notoriously brutal Taliban regime.
According to figures by British charity organisation Oxfam, 87 percent of Afghan women report having experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence or forced marriage.
Last month a 20-year-old woman was beheaded by her husband’s family in the western province of Herat after she refused to become a prostitute, police said. Four people were arrested over the brutal killing.
And in September, five people were arrested over the public flogging of a 16-year-old girl for allegedly having an affair.
The girl was whipped 100 times in front of village elders and family members in central Ghazni province. Her alleged boyfriend was fined.
Unmarried girls are often confined to the home and forbidden from maintaining any contact with men outside the immediate family.

I am sorry but such events do not happen in civilized worlds and even if they do, it can be safely said that they are acute exceptions and usually committed by those who either hail from the uncivilized world or have some sort of connection..like immigrants in western countries. Dont rationalize your own bad deeds by equating them with others.
Barbaric. And these people act so proud over these customs etc etc. Religion does NOT preach this; I dont know where some posters above are getting that idea from. All of these crimes are totally un-Islamic. This is inhumanity, hypocrisy and ignorance all combined in one bumper package.
These things happen all over the civilized and uncivilized world but some posters are quick to label Afghanistan as a primitive country and forget about the brutalities women face in progressive and liberal Pakistan.
Misery needs company and Pakistanis enjoy reading about such incidents because it makes them feel better about themselves. The Germans call it Schadenfreude. Don't worry we will soon read about a Pakistani family involved in killing their daughter somewhere in Pakistan or in the West for honor. We all know who the sick man of South Asia is.
@Saleem. Too much religion? no religion teaches this. Religion is the last thing they follow. If these people followed religion like Allah wants them to then we wouldn't be having all these issues. I wish people in Pakistan and Afghanistan start to live like normal God fearing people. I am tired of all this
Why compare these people to animals.Animals do not kill each other in the name of religions of holiness.they kill only when they are hungry or fear danger.Animals are so much more dignified thn these cretins and morons.

There are times when I feel sad thinking about the current state of Pakistan and worrying about our future. Then I read such news and realise that there are countries out there who are far worse than us. RIP little girl, you're in a much better place now.

Worse than animals. Results of no education and too much religion.
It appears no education or religion can make animals in to men. This poor girls soul's vengeance will be in the afterlife. RIP daughter, it was not your fault for being in a backward country.
Typical Afghanistan, yet these people are so proud of their primitive country.
