For one police constable in Shikarpur, answering his door in the early hours of Monday morning turned out to be the last thing he would do.
Constable Kamal Khan Domki was fast asleep at his residence near the Mari police post. He was stirred out of his slumber by knocks on his door. When he opened it, he saw himself staring down the barrel of a gun. A group of armed men standing at his doorstep shot him dead and then fled. The body was handed over to the relatives after the postmortem was conducted.

Kamal Khan reportedly killed a criminal, Mohammad Bux Shar, one year ago. A jirga was held soon after and the policeman was found guilty. It is not uncommon for law enforcers to be found guilty for killing criminals, especially if the slain men’s relatives have significant clout over the tribe. During the jirga, a fine of Rs700,000 was imposed on the police constable.
Domki reportedly managed to pay Rs500,000 in installments, but refused to pay the remaining amount. When contacted, SHO Ehsan Mahar said that Domki’s relatives have not come to the Lakhi Ghulam Shah police station to lodge an FIR.
