PCB may compensate trio after BBL pullout

Board mulling over plan to pay Ajmal, Afridi, Akmal

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is mulling over plans to compensate Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal and Umar Akmal after the trio was barred from taking part in the Big Bash League (BBL) despite an earlier green signal to sign contracts with the league.

In a late u-turn, the PCB told the players to appear in the domestic Twenty20 event that is scheduled to start from December 2 and will also help the selectors gauge form and fitness ahead of naming squads for the tour of India.

“It’s a big financial loss for the players,” a close aide of one of the contracted players told The Express Tribune. “The players have rightly followed the board’s orders but they want something in return as they feel it is their right. The players had received permission to sign BBL contracts now it’s the board’s duty to pay them.”

Meanwhile, a PCB official confirmed that the board was mulling over the option of compensating the players.

“The board is also discussing plans to compensate top cricketers for skipping leagues on regular basis in order to save them from burn-out and over exposure,” said the official.

Adelaide hit back at the PCB

The Adelaide Strikers have criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) late move of barring Saeed Ajmal from taking part in the Big Bash League.

Besides Ajmal, the Strikers also lost all-rounder Andrew McDonald who needs surgery on his hamstring.

“It’s not a tragedy but we were certainly looking forward to having Ajmal, he’s world-class,” South Australian Cricket Association Director of Cricket Jamie Cox told The Advertiser. “The PCB decided they’re going to run a competition of which no-one knew anything about a few days ago and that’s effectively taken precedence. That’s disappointing but at the end of the day, those are the dangers of involving ourselves in the international markets.

“We’ve started seeing what else might be around and if we can find a player who can make an impact for us, we’ll replace him.”
