President’s Trophy: All-round Babar stars in Wapda’s innings win

KARACHI: All-round Zulfiqar Babar starred in an innings-and-nine-runs win for Wapda over NBP by taking seven wickets and playing a 78-run knock in the President’s Trophy match at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.

The third day of the four-day match started with NBP trailing by 122 runs in their second-innings but could only manage 113 before being bowled out in 33.2 overs.

Nasir Jamshed top-scored with 56 but Kamran Akmal, Fawad Alam and Qaiser Abbas were all dismissed without scoring.

Babar, Junaid Khan and Azhar Attari took three wickets apiece in the innings. The win gave Wapda nine points which lifted them into fifth position in the table.

Meanwhile, former Pakistan captain Younus Khan scored his second century of the President’s Trophy to put HBL in a winning position against UBL at the Pindi Stadium.

HBL resumed on 175 for four and went on to declare their second-innings on 376 for eight. Younus made 133 off 217 balls, hitting 18 boundaries while Humayun Farhat (54) and Usman Salahuddin (50) gave him valuable support.

Set a daunting 427 to win, UBL reached 114 for three with Imran Ali unbeaten on 30 as Umar Gul picked up two wickets.

PQA eye win

In another match, Khurram Manzoor’s impressive ton laid the foundation of PQA eyeing their second win of the season. Manzoor made a 276-ball 152 against KRL, laced with 20 fours, as PQA were dismissed for 344 — a first-inning lead of 55. Batsman Ali Khan, who has been bowling regularly lately, picked up three wickets. In reply, KRL slumped to 135 for nine with a slim lead of just 80. Tanvir Ahmed and Azam Hussain bagged three wickets each.

Leaders SNGPL, searching for another win, boldly declared their second-innings on 145 for five, setting PIA a target of 278. PIA were 68 for four with Shoaib Malik not out on 26.

Elsewhere, Sohail Tanvir completed his ten-wicket haul for the match and Mohammad Khalil claimed a five-for to bring ZTBL back into contention against SBP despite conceding a first-innings lead.
