AVCC officer’s wife, relative shot dead

Wife and close relative of an Anti-Violent Crime Cell official were gunned down in Soldier Bazaar early Saturday.

KARACHI: The wife and a close relative of an Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) official were gunned down in Soldier Bazaar early Saturday.

According to Jamshed Quarters police, unidentified men on motorcycles opened indiscriminate fire on Sub-Inspector Waseem Ahmed’s car in Soldier Bazaar No 3. The firing killed Jameela, 35, and the policeman’s 22-year-old relative Abdur Rasheed, son of Abdus Samad.

The sub-inspector and his wife used to live in Usmanabad. Jamshed SHO Arif Afridi said that they have yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack. “We will be able to give more information once the family lodges an FIR,” he said.

Quoting a few witnesses, Afridi said that Ahmed was driving the car, while Jameela and Abdur Rasheed were sitting in the back seat. “The motorcyclists came and fired at the people sitting on the back seat,” he said, adding that, “we have collected evidence from the spot”. Afridi believed that Ahmed did not have a personal enmity with anyone.

The victims’ bodies were taken to Civil hospital for legal formalities.

AVCC SP Usman Ghani condemned the killings.

“We hope the culprits will be arrested soon,” he said. The police have yet to register a case however they have started investigations.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead and five others injured in clashes between two communities in Khadda Market, Lyari, within the jurisdiction of Kalri police station. According to the police, the fight started over a petty argument near Madina Mosque.

The deceased was later identified as Salman Khamees, 35, who was shot in the eye and died during treatment. He belonged to the Katchi community.

The injured men included Zaman, 22, Waheed, 33, Zareen, 22, Amroz, 26, and Hakeem, all of whom sustained bullet injuries and are under treatment at Civil hospital.
