PESHAWAR:

The domestic violence bill was severely criticised by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl at a special meeting convened to discuss the matter.

At Tuesday’s meeting, JUI-F MPA Mufti Kifayataullah said: “The bill is a concoction of an “NGO” mindset and a ploy to impose western culture onto our society. He reiterated his party’s resolve to continue opposing the bill on every platform.

Earlier in August, MPA Noor Sahar of the Pakistan Peoples Party had drafted a private members bill in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to end domestic violence against women. However, it could not be passed because a similar bill was presented in the National Assembly.

MPA Noor Sahar said that the bill was brought to the floor of the house with “good intentions” to curb violence against working women. She termed Mufti’s claims as baseless. The meeting which was held at the provincial assembly was adjourned till after Muharram 10.

K-P Provincial Commission on the Status of Women Chairperson Zubaida along with other civil society representatives, who tried to enter the building, were denied  from doing so.

Sahar said that NGO officials and civil society members tried to walk in without any invitation or prior permission by the government.
