The Punjab Teachers Union has called off plans for province-wide protest after reaching agreement with the provincial government over when new benefits announced by the federal government in July will be implemented.
The union staged a demonstration at Nasser Bagh on Wednesday morning, as planned, to demand that the provincial government issue notifications granting a conveyance allowance, TA/DA and leave encashment privileges to public sector teachers.
But the union called off a subsequent march to and sit-in at the Civil Secretariat after receiving assurances from various government officials. PTU spokesman Rana Liaquat Ali said that Education Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman and others had pledged that the conveyance allowance would be notified immediately, while the TA/DA and leave encashment notifications would be issued by November 30.
The minister had also pledged that other demands made by the PTU regarding promotions would be addressed by December 31, said Ali. He said the union was putting off further protests till after November 30. “We will boycott all our duties if the government backs out of its commitments,” said Ali.
