The postings and transfers of the police officers lack merit, the judges observed.

KARACHI:

Instead of depoliticising police, the Sindh government has caused further damage by inducting its blue-eyed people in the force and then giving them out-of-turn promotions.

This was observed by the Supreme Court in its eight-page interim order on its recent hearings about the implementation of its judgement in suo motu case on Karachi violence. The apex court had earlier recommended de-politicisation of the police force to improve law and order situation in the violence-hit city.

The judges noted that the recruitment process in the police service was not transparent; service record of the personnel was not properly documented, which could provide senior officials the yardstick to evaluate their performances. Similarly, no character roll was attached to the service book or the personal file of the personnel and likewise no periodical Annual Confidential Reports were written by the relevant officers.

The court said it was a hard fact that police had been politicised by out-of-turn promotions and inductions from other departments time and again causing unrest amongst the deserving police officials awaiting promotion on merit. The postings and transfers of the police officers also lack merit, the judges observed.
