KARACHI:

The Pakistan U15 baseball squad will leave for India for the Asian Junior Cup on Tuesday, ending speculations about the team’s inability to obtain permission to play there.

The tournament will commence on Tuesday in Cuttack, where teams from Pakistan, India, Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia and China will take part.

According to pitcher Sarmad Yaqoob, the team has been preparing for the Asian Cup for three months and he feels lucky to be a part of the first Under-15 squad from the country to participate in India.

“I can’t believe that I got this break so early in my baseball career,” Yaqoob told The Express Tribune. “I’m very excited about representing my country there. I hope our baseball match garners as much interest as cricket does in both countries.”

According to Baseball Federation of Pakistan (BFP) Secretary Pervez Shah Khawar, the team was relieved when they got their visas, as earlier the Pakistan Bodybuilding Federation had failed to obtain the same.

He said the BFP will be sending a 20-member squad including 14 players.

“We had applied for the visas a month ago and I am glad that we didn’t face rejection,” said Khawar.
