Suspect dies mysteriously in police custody

Faiz was arrested by Rangers for possessing an illegal weapon before being handed over to police for questioning.

KARACHI: A person detained on charges of possessing illegal weapons, died in an Orangi Town police lock-up on Tuesday.

As per available details, thirty-two-year-old Naveed Faiz was apprehended on Monday from Orangi Town No 10. Police sources said that Rangers had arrested the accused and later handed him over to authorities at the Mominabad police station in Orangi Town for further investigation.

Mominabad police registered the case against him for possessing illegal weapon (CrPC 13-D) and kept him detained in the the lock-up where he died on Tuesday.

Following his death, Faiz’s family staged a protest and claimed that he was killed owing to police brutally and torture.

Police high ups, while taking notice of the incident, suspended SHO Naveed Nasir and constituted a departmental inquiry to probe the death.

SSP Amir Farooqui while talking to The Express Tribune said that the deceased was an asthma patient and it was quite possible that he died due to the breathing disorder. Forooqui added that the body of the accused was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital to conduct a postmortem.

The SSP said that the police will only be able to offer further clues  about Faiz’s death after doctors’ file their final examination report.

Farooqui added that the accused was being questioned over his possible involvement in the murder of a police officer.
