If Indian film-makers want to take that big leap in the international market, they should experiment with popular global genres like action, drama and adventure, says film-maker Ashutosh Gowariker.
“Our genre is song and dance, it is music, it is love and this is actually just five per cent of the total films produced in the international market. What rules is action, drama, and adventure — this is the most popular global genre,” the 48-year-old said on Wednesday at the 14th Mumbai Film Festival’s Open Forum.
Gowariker believes the language of a film also makes a big difference. “If we can have these genres in English, which has a global reach, then we will be able to take those strides. But if we focus only on personal films and musicals, then it’s going to be difficult. It will be taken as novelty, but we will not be able to make that leap,” he said.
Gowariker states that there are film-makers in the country who want to make films without songs and dances and they should be given a chance to do it. “There are two kinds of film-makers right now in the country and one is the film-maker who has stories for the Indian audience.”
“There is another category of film-makers as well who want to tell stories in which they don’t want songs and dance — they want to make two-and-a-half hour films, 90-minute or 120-minute films. The target audience they are looking for is an international audience because they know that these stories are not going to appeal to Indians. So those film-makers should be allowed to make their films for the global audience,” he added.
Gowariker’s last directorial was Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey in 2010. He is currently working on a new script.
