FAISALABAD: Two suspected robbers were killed on Tuesday shortly after a police head constable and a gunman were injured in a shootout with the suspects on Canal Road in Madina Town.

Police said Shahid Naveed, manager at the SNA Textile Mills, was carrying Rs2.8 million while he was on his way home. A guard named Zahid and a friend, Khalid Riaz, head constable at the Nankana police station, were also with him.

They said when the three men reached Kashmir Bridge on Canal Road, two men on a motorcycle stopped them. They snatched the money from them. As the robbers left, Zahid fired at them. The robbers shot back. The gunman and the head constable were hit. The shooting caught the attention of some policemen at a nearby police post, who then chased the robbers.

The police team, headed by Assistant Sub Inspector Afzal, surrounded the area. Police said the robbers started firing first. The police shot back, killing both of them on the spot.

SSP (Operations) Sadiq Ali Dogar, Madina Town SP Tahir Maqsood and the station house officer reached the spot.

The injured men were taken to a hospital, where they were reported to be out of danger. The bodies were sent for a post-mortem examination.

Some witnesses later told The Express Tribune that the two robbers were shot by the gunman and the head constable. The police, however, later claimed to have killed them in a shootout, they said.

Police denied the allegations.

In Bahawalpur, police claimed to have arrested a motorcycle thief and his dealer on Tuesday. They later recovered 22 motorcycles from various places on information obtained from them.

DSP Azizullah Khan of the Kotwali police Station said that Muhammad Mumtaz was caught red-handed at the General Bus Stand while he was trying to steal a motorcycle. He said Mumtaz confessed to stealing the bikes and then selling them to one Ayub Jambeel, who was later also arrested by the police.
