These are wild theories and have no empirical basis. Some of them are plainly outrageous. But then that hardly matters. What matters is that these have blunted, what a few days ago, looked like a fairly straightforward and pointed demand: the Taliban have started to attack schoolgirls for speaking and writing about education, so the state should say enough is enough and tackle them decisively. What also matters is that these theories have put both the state and the government on the back foot, forcing them to reconsider their options and scale back their enthusiasm for going after the hub of such attacks. The PPP, whose president and prime minister, mouthed valiant bluster when Malala was attacked, have gone completely quiet leaving the field open to the ramblings of Rehman Malik. The PML-N, while continuing to position itself against the stance of the PTI does not want to push the demand of the North Waziristan operation too hard. Its support to the operation is "conditional", which essentially means that its leaders would gingerly and even haltingly follow rather than lead the march on this score. Imran Khan's party continues to weigh against another military operation, hammering the point that use of force is not an option anymore and can only lead to more violence. The PTI leadership's peace plea, however, remains skeletal and without any meaningful details about its implementation. This leaves the ANP as the sole pitcher for the North Waziristan operation. However, it would not surprise anyone if it, too, begins to tone down its stance: the cost of speaking against the militants is paid not in sweat but only in blood.
Interestingly, the army's interest in the North Waziristan operation, too, has ebbed and flowed in tune with the political mood and public opinion trends. The generals make the argument that a fractured political scene and divided public opinion makes any battle-plan impractical. The same argument is couched in the statement that the political leadership has to give a go-ahead for the operation to start. However, like everything else in Pakistan, this issue, too, is not as simple as it is made out to be. The army high command has been in two minds about North Waziristan for three years. In the wake of, nay almost parallel, to South Waziristan's Rah-e-Nijat Operation, there was this should-we or should-we-not circular reasoning about the fate of North Waziristan.
So, the confusion is quite chronic and it showed again after the Malala incident in all its ugliness. Immediately after the attack, the army took charge of all developments concerning Malala. Inter-Services Public Relations started to run a health bulletin on the injured child. The army chief's visit to her produced an incredible press release that had this sentence in capital letters: "We refuse to bow before terror. We fill fight, regardless of the cost, we will prevail Inshallah." This almost suggested as if commandos were about to rope down in terror-infested compounds of North Waziristan. There was much hype and plenty of meetings. Now, however, this leaping fire of rage has calmed down to a sputtering flame. The health bulletin has stopped. Malala is recuperating in London. Tolerance for audacious attacks on police checkposts and IED blasts have returned. The army brass has gone back to the familiar drawing board, thinking yet again, ‘What to do about North Waziristan? Should we or should we not?’ It is stalemate all over again.

If army does not act now then worst is yet to come.Extremism is a monstar which should be crushed as soon as possible , if not ,then no Malala and no citizen of pakistan has any future.Army is our only hope and let not this ray of hope be faded away and save us from this menace.
So, everyone has burried their head back in the sand, where they were the before the Malala incident.
Nobody wants to take action against the Taliban.
The bombings and killings by the Taliban will continue, until the next Malala incident.
I worry for the future of Pakistan.
Let the entire nation be in confused state . As a matter of fact if army will not do the job then some one else will do it , In fact the operation is already going on . Drones are doing the job . The involvement of pak army will reduce the collatral loss to a greate extent , Operation through ground offensive will finish the job in a short period . NW operation is in the national interest .
@Ejaaz: InshaAllah.
@observer:
And pray what message would that be, Lord Observer?
@Sultan:
The attackers were either very bad shots or wanted to only injur the hapless child to “send a message”
Or may be by miraculously saving the child God has 'sent a message'.
Are we receiving it, Loud and Clear. Eh,Watson?
Why Mr talat is in so hurry to see an operation in wazirastan. It seems that he want to hear a news that operation being Launched in waziratan while he wake up in one morning. I want to see his same restless outrage against drones attack. But the issue of drones attack is so explosive and destructive for media and anchors as if drone will hit their Heads if they speak out against them. This is called pure Yellow journalism.
@bibyawari
Sounds grand but ignores the obvious - you have taken that approach in the past and each time the Taliban haven't honored the agreement. Not to worry though - your army has had 10+ years to address this problem and one speech by Kayani doesn't mean that they are going to do a 180.
@bibyawari: Please explain how Pakistan can have a nuclear arsenal but can't extend the writ of the state to the Agencies???
Quote from NYT:
“Malala is still showing some signs of infection which is probably related to the bullet track, which is our key source of concern,” he said. Tracing the path of the bullet that struck her for the first time, Dr. Rosser said, “Malala was struck just above the back of the left eye. The bullet went down through the side of her jaw, damaging the skull and the jaw joint on the left hand side,” he said. It then “went through the neck and lodged in the tissues above the shoulder blade.” “The bullet grazed the edge of her brain. Certainly, if you’re talking a couple of inches more central, then it’s almost certainly an unsurvivable injury,” he said.
Hmmmm.... The attackers were either very bad shots or wanted to only injur the hapless child to "send a message" Elementray, Dr. Watson, elementary!
@Sultan:
No military action yet. Let's go back to praying for Mallala!
.....The Waiting Game on Pakistan by the international community as the melt down has already started. Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad predicted this melt down in his 1946 interview.
I will say, DIVIDE (not destroy) Pakistan in four autonomous states or in two states on the edges of mighty Indus.
operation in NW will create more problems for pakistan, hence, its better to engage with these militants and resolved the issue through dialogue. However, if the govt is going to do it on behest of foreign dictation then we will not be able to stop the suicide spell.....that will the country wrecked. Most important if US and NATO has given its plan to leave Afghanistan then launching offensive in NW will be catastrophic, where other players will jump into the show completely putting the state into chaos, and making it ready UN interference to get hold of our Nukes
not very different from our last discussion
Good one Talat
The question is not whether carrying out an operation in North Waziristan or not. The question is whether the present military and political leaderships want to save Pakistan or not! Though the incident of Malala's shooting was a sad story in the history pages of Pakistan but I think this incident had helped build popular consensus to carry out the operation and root out the extremist elements once and for all. Opportunity may not come again, time is running out, with the time militants may gain strength and may bounce back once again in the national stage making headlines on the newspapers. Foreign investments are already down. Economy is contracting. Unemployment is rising. The answer is clearly written on the wall.
Talat Sb, you may be the correct that the PTI plan is lacking of details but at least they have a plan be it good, bad or indifferent. The public and media should demand a plan from the other parties including the governing coalition which wasted almost 5 years to tackle this issue. Who stopped the govt from doing an operation any where it wanted to. They claim that it's a democratic dispensation and they are in charge then do something. Don't tell me it's because of Imran Khan that they cannot act then why don't they resign and call an election. It's funny that the MQM is backing the military for operations in NWA what about Karachi where people are dying like cats and dogs and our liberal elite are holding them as a vanguard against extremism, please clean up your own backyard first.
"In popular perception, the Malala incident is no longer an open and shut case of the Taliban attempting to silence an ardent spokesperson for female education and a budding activist for her liberal values."
First of all, Talat, "female education" is not a sign of liberalism. Please stop confusing the two.
Quran starts with "Iqra" as far as I know. Please project that there is nothing liberal about girls going to school and learning to read and do math problems and scientific theories about how the world works. The problem is, when making the case against the conspiracy theories, we inadvertently spoil our own argument by ceding to the on-going narrative and hence bolstering it.
Secondly, we should detach, as much as we can, the idea of attack on this young girl from the notion of using force in North Waziristan. Once detached, this issue is very glaring and will produce the right effect of warming up masses.
@ Hammad, not just Imran Khan, all religious parties, right wingers, media Talibans deserve this credit. Just visit facebook and see how things are twisted.
@ Khawaja
US intelligence network has been in Pakistan since 1958, mushroomed in 1980s. After all they are your fellow Jihadis. Remember the great Jihad you guys fought against the evil Russians?
@ Khadija
No hope for you.
The parties who are supporting operation against TTP and other terrorist are those who have lost loved ones in this war. But PTI, PMLN, and other right wing parties didn't lose any one and any thing. So they don't feel the pain what rest of Pakistan feel. Pakistanis are living a life of uncertainty. No one is sure to return home safely while leaving it in morning.
@Hammad: As my brother Hammad knows "everything" about the tribal areas. Dude, read some history and then we'll talk. As a tribal myself, I clearly read IK's intentions to end this extremism. Yes, it sounds fishy and believe me, he's 95% right.
America is behind this attack so that US can deceive Pak public to operation in NWA. Now people cannot be fooled unlike the so called lashing video and resultant Swat operation. Mr. Talat we are your fans but please be realistic .
Mr Talat . Well You have given up rationality and cold calculation in the emotional storm of liberal warmongers . It is the same mindset that argued that US Intelligence network in Pakistan is a "conspiracy theory" and it turned out to be false . Now this is the reply which is apt and realistic :

War is a position of conflict between states, organizations or countries. Wars have been going on since the beginning of time. In ancient civilizations war was often seen as noble and moral. Today though, many people question the morality of war and often ask if war is even necessary. The questions “War creates more problems that are solved” and “Are wars necessary?” Are interlocked, because if war creates more problems than it solves, why do we go to war? It would mean that war is a hopeless cause. Another way of looking at it is; you cannot answer the question “Are wars necessary?” without looking through different scenarios and asking questions about each. The three questions, which are keys to knowing if war is necessary, are; what problems are solved by war? What problems are created by war? And can wars be justified; can there be an appropriate reason to go to war which could take precedence over the first two questions?
War is a state of conflict and each time war is declared the main aim is to try and solve a problem. War is different in each situation and you cannot say that every war solved the problems that induced fighting in the first pla
I think military operation is not the solution and there is need to change the mindset of pakistan's military and establishment, not to use islam as a tool.
Well,Well,Well.....................one question for talat........please can you guarantee it that there will be no more killings of the very innocents killings like malalai in the operations,can you guarntee peace prevailence with the operation??...Do u younot think this will simply serve the foriegn pakistan,s enemies agenda....Mr.Talat the Root cause not from now ,always lies in afghanistan,and the so called ,War On Terror....i was thinking you being having a very good historical and well aware of the gorund realities,...But today, i am really astonished with your final analysis & your opinion for the military solution....Remember one thing the Root cause for all lies in occupation of afghanistan by foriegn forces,..2ndly the military operations has never resulted good,you can go and ask teh locals of swat,north and south waziristan,they have now scared and living in fear and disparity....as no one could even guarantee thier living with honour even if displaced,and you know when those pushtoons face those operation created problems,then they starts hating this country,thier people and even this system and constitution who has no value for them,..and then can be very easily distracted and be brought in to to enter the enemies ranks . Mr.Talat..if you want the true solutions to the root cause ,after the NATO & ISAF forces leave the afghanistan,before that you have to start ,educating the people of FATA,provinding them with thier basic rights,...Have you ever asked why there is not Even a single unversity ,Medical college,Eng.college,Technical education centres,Industrial zones,Roads,electricity,etc..For thier basic rights,...Even..only you the Media starts barking when it comes to serving your vested intersts of your foriegn masters...you never higlights the matters that really matters to the peace and security of Pakistan. When it comes to Karachi then you starts showing the killings of the people by rangers,to defame the pakistani security forces,but when it comes to the MQM,the ANp,and politicians killings many innocents in main hub of pakistani economical cities ,you are against the military operation.
@Ejaaz: Sorry Ejaaz. Feel your pain. Also could sense your despair in your comment in Kamran Shafi's OpEd. Hope you and yours are safe.
Nobody deserves the credit for creating confusion and muddling the issue more than Imran Khan.
"This leaves the ANP as the sole pitcher for the North Waziristan operation" ANP and MQM. In fact on this particular issue MQM has been far more vocal. Amongst the people who should have attaracted your criticism, I would have liked to see the army as well. After all, it acted unilaterally without approval from civilian government approval in memo gate case, so why not here? Surely the national interest here is of much higher order than in that case? But these minor issues notwithstanding - great OpEd.
If Malala killer were Swatis under Fazlulah in Kunar Afghanistan,(per Reuters reporting) why are we marching into NWA again? Or cant we even ask our "allies" this tiniest favor, or do we just take orders? Has everybody forgotten their geography or we rather not miss an opportunity to capitalize on a tragedy? And ANP the sole pitcher of Swat operation have to listened to Altaf bhai.
Spiegel reports ‘Top German Economists Say Greece Is Lost’. ‘Several top German economic institutes on Thursday warned that German growth is slowing as the country continues to be hampered by the ongoing euro-zone debt crisis. And Greece, they say, will be unable to “free itself from its debt burden” and will need another haircut’. (11 Oct. 2012) Spiegel reports, ‘Euro Exit by Southern Nations could cost 17 Trillion Euros’. ‘Economic research group Prognos, in a study commissioned by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, estimated that euro exits by Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy would wipe a total of € 17.2 trillion ($ 22.3 trillion) off worldwide growth by 2020’. ‘The researchers arrived at a particularly bleak assessment because they didn’t just calculate the losses of creditors who had lent money to the crisis-hit nations. They also analyzed the possible impact of euro collapse on economic growth in the 42 most important industrial and emerging economies that make up more than 90 percent of the world economy’. (17 Oct. 2012) Bad time ahead for West and good time for Pakistan, now elite class compel to bring back looted money and new investments in Pakistan will make this country a reasonable place to live. When West will have no money then there will be no war against terrorism and no terrorist, everyone will live with peace. Now everyone will love Pakistan and work for Pakistan, and if we shall stay neutral and let different Afghan groups to solve their differences mutually, I am sure after five year all Afghan will consider Pakistan their best friend. Now no country of the world can afford to interfere in other country’s internal affairs, now nearly every country of the world wants a healthy relationship with Pakistan.
We cry over malala and think of taking military action when it come to North waziristan but we Ignore daily target Killing in Quetta and Karachi which are politically motivated as well and no less insignificant than Malala. What about the stalemate cum blackmailing of a decade with Karachi's Terrorist wings and Quetta's killing Squads.
Talat seems to confuse about Pakistani Talibans, When you talk to ordinary people of Tribal areas they are sacred of double edge sword either TTP existence in Tribal Areas or Military operation. In both condition normal people will be suffered and bleed. But people of Tribal Areas should stand up for their legitimate rights and safeguard their Mothers, Sisters and Daughters from both enemies and assure their Basic Human Rights, Education, Health and Freedom.
When those in power have mansions abroad and money tucked away in foreign banks why will they risk a nasty fight with the Jihadis? It is not going to happen. Pakistan will be Talibanized and all the present crop of leaders will be writing sitting safely overseas.
