On August 30, eight-year-old Ahmad Polani, the son of yarn merchant Zubair Polani, was abducted from the Frere area. The kidnappers had demanded Rs5 million for his release.
They had earlier kidnapped 10-year-old Huzaifa, the son of clearing agent Dr Sagheer, from Gulshan on August 27 and demanded the same ransom from his parents.
On Monday morning, a CPLC team formed by the committee’s chief Ahmad Chinoy along with an AVCC team led by DSP Noor Mughal and Inspector Moin conducted a raid at a house in Pak Colony.
After 20 minutes of crossfire with the kidnappers, they managed to rescue the boys and arrested one suspect. However, three others managed to escape.
“They (kidnappers) managed to escape because it was dark and the area has a cluster of buildings besides very narrow lanes,” AVCC chief SP Usman Ghani told a press conference at the Garden Headquarters.
He was accompanied by Chinoy, one of the abducted children and other police officials. “Both boys are in a stable condition,” he said. The hands and legs of the boys were tied with ropes when they were found. The arrested kidnapper has been identified as Khair Mohammad.
Chinoy said the boys were kidnapped by a group of five criminals, who were part of a larger network of kidnappers headed by a criminal named Anwer Kojak.
“Anwer is the ringleader of such activities,” Chinoy explained.
“We used technology and checked different police records to locate the culprits. I would say it was a multi-dimensional operation.”
The officials said they didn’t bring Ahmad Polani to the press conference because he had developed a fever.
The other boy, Huzaifa, told The Express Tribune that the abductors did not harass him.
“They did not torture me. I was provided with food,” he said, adding that there were four abductors, who kept telling him that his father was coming to take him away.
The AVCC also claimed it has arrested notorious gangster Ghulam Nabi alias Gulabi near Bhains Colony and recovered a TT pistol from his possession.
Ghulam Nabi belongs to Khairpur district and carries headmoney of Rs0.5 million.
