HARIPUR:

Unlike previous years, the Khanpur Sports Gala started amid heightened security at Khanpur Lake on Friday.

This time round, there was no proper inauguration or any dignitary to open the much-trumpeted regatta.

The three-day festival would entertain the picnickers with activities such as water boating, hot air balloons, fishing competition and performances by folk artists from across the country.

Traditional food and handicraft stalls have been set up. There is also a play area for children.

According to Asim, one of the organisers, although the festival was delayed for a month, yet being one of the biggest water sports festival in the country, it is expected to attract more visitors more than ever before, as the law and order situation in Hazara, especially Khanpur, area was comparatively much better off than the rest of the province.

A police source said that heavy contingents of police with elite forces were deployed in and around the venue.
