LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Monday issued a contempt of court notice to the chief executive of a visa consultancy firm for presenting a fake medical certificate for getting exemption from personal appearance in the court.

Earlier, Dr Asfandyar of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) appeared before the court and disowned the medical certificate used by the accused Asim Malik to seek exemption from appearance before the court. He termed the certificate fake.

The court asked whether the accused was present or not.

The counsel for the accused said his client’s life was under threat. So, he cannot appear before the court.

This irked Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi who remarked that the man had apparently duped people and was now playing hide and seek with the court.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director Waqar Haider said the agency had registered a fraud cases against Asim Malik on 32 complaints in compliance with the court orders. He said this case had been handed over to Deputy Director Nasir Jamil. More cases would be registered against Malik if more people contacted the FIA with complaints, Haider said.

The court deferred the hearing till October 15 and sought assistance from senior lawyers on the point whether or not the court could supervise investigations into these cases.

The court is hearing dozens of writ petitions moved by citizens against the Future Concern. The petitioners alleged that they had given money to Malik for going abroad. They said Malik neither sent them abroad nor returned their money.
