KARACHI:

Nerves appeared frayed as 7,766 students sat the entrance exam for the NED University of Engineering and Technology on Saturday. They were competing for 1,983 seats across 23 disciplines.

Students were required to score more than 50 per cent to become eligible for admission to the university. The results for two versions of the test, one for pre-medical students and the other for pre-engineering students, were put on the university’s website soon after the students had finished taking them. To facilitate the parents and guardians who accompanied students for the entrance test, various students organisations had set up makeshift waiting areas along University Road.

Of the 1,983 seats that are up for grabs, 1,700 are offered on open merit, with 283 being reserved for self finance students. These students have to deposit a one-time fee of Rs500,000 in addition to the regular tuition fee. Candidates who qualify on regular seats will have to pay Rs17,000 at the time of their admission.

The university will arrange an “Open Day” for successful candidates on Monday. They would be able to visit various departments along with their parents. NED University’s registrar, Javed Aziz Khan, has made it clear that the university would be closed for normal operations and that its current students will not be allowed to enter the campus on the day.

Minor disturbance

An individual, identified as Raheel, was caught impersonating the actual candidate, Sarfaraz Khan, during the entrance test. NED’s security guards handed him over to the police.
