BAHAWALPUR/ FAISALABAD: Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) and Islamia University Bahawalpur on Friday arranged a seminar and a walk to mark the World Teachers Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) created the day in 1994 to celebrate teachers. The slogan for 2012 is ‘Take a stand for teachers!’

According to the Unesco website, “taking a stand for the teaching profession means providing adequate training, ongoing professional development, and protection for teachers’ rights... Why take a stand for teachers? Because the profession is losing status in many parts of the world.”

At the Islamia University Bahawalpur, a group of students presented a bouquet of flowers to Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Mukhtar.

Dr Mukhtar thanked the students and advised them to respect their teachers. He described teachers as “a source of inspiration and guidance”. He said one of Islam’s teachings was to respect teachers.

The Directorate of Alumni and Senior Tutors Office then held a walk to mark the day, in which both students and teachers took part.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zakir Husain presided over the GCUF seminar, which was addressed by the University of Agriculture Faisalabad Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Ashfaq and GCUF Dean Dr Nureen Aziz Qureshi among others.

Dr Husain said a country’s progress is dependant upon quality education. Teachers, he said, play an important role in imparting quality education “to guarantee a bright future”. He said teachers, no matter which grade they taught, deserved respect and appreciation.

Husain stressed the need for hiring qualified teachers so that educational institutes can provide good education. He advised teachers to keep learning new things so that they could continue contributing to the society.

“A good teacher is friendly and sincere,” said the University of Agriculture Faisalabad dean. Dr Muhammad Ashfaq said a teacher’s job was to teach children “more than what is in the books” and to encourage them to become good human beings.
