At around 7:15pm, a man identified as Abdul Lateef Bawany was shot in the chest at the popular outdoor hangout on Friday evening. Eyewitness Nefer Sehgal, formerly a photographer with The Express Tribune, looked up from her cup of tea to see one man in a white kurta storm out with the gun. When she realised who had been shot she rushed to his side and pressed down on the wound to staunch the flow while screaming for others to help. Eventually Bawany was rushed to the nearby Ziauddin Hospital.
There are conflicting accounts of what had exactly happened. According to Constable Imamdin Rajpar at the Boat Basin police station, they have gleaned so far that two men entered the cafe and tried to snatch Bawany’s cell phone. When he refused, they shot him and fled. “People say it was a mugging, a man just walked in and took the victim’s wallet,” said one eyewitness who did not want to be named.
A man who was sitting next to Bawany and the cash register, said however, that the suspects, three men wearing shalwar kameez, came to rob the café - a far more believable theory. “One of the men pointed a gun at the cashier. Bawany got up suddenly and the suspects turned and shot him,” he said. Bawany was wearing black trousers and a checkered shirt.
An employee of the café corroborated that there were three young men. “The gun was on the cashier’s counter, Bawany just turned and I think the suspect got nervous and fired at him,” he said.
At Ziauddin Hospital, Dr Gulab, who is treating Bawany, said that his liver and heart were safe. The liver is slightly damaged but a surgeon was called in to operate. He was admitted to the ICU.
Bawany’s paternal uncle Tariq, who was at the hospital, said that the family had just been discussing over dinner the other day how unsafe the city had become. “We were talking about how even if you had a pistol or a bullet-proof car, you never know what could happen,” he said surrounded by seven or eight relatives. “Look at what has happened to him today.”
Bawany’s sister, who is a teacher, said that when she got a phone call from home asking her to rush to the hospital, she thought something had happened to her mother who has been unwell. “When I got there, I found out that my brother had been shot,” she said. “It is a bad time for our family especially since my younger sister was also injured in an accident.”
SHO Nasir Tanoli claims to have arrested one of the suspects identified as Abdul Rehman, a resident of Sultanabad. “We saw [the suspects] on a motorcycle, they were speeding away in traffic,” he said. “They looked suspicious. We arrested one of them and the other two escaped.”
The man who brought Bawany to hospital said that his car had been shot at and he had read about muggings in the news but this was the first time he saw someone get shot. “I cannot tell you how I feel right now,” he said. “I cannot stop shivering.”
Bawany is believed to be an MBA graduate from the Lahore University of Management Sciences and works with the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation. He is said to have four children.

Gem of a Guy and I believe he has recovered to great extent now so he is out of danger ......................... By the Way he is also an Engineer from GIKI.
MQM, ANP, PPP, ABC, XYZ, YOU elected good for nothing people, when will you realize we need to DISARM PAKISTAN.
no issues with the story. indeed it is very sad. but what irked me a little and slightly disturbed me was the title of the article. the emphasis seemed to be more on the fact that the guy was from lums rather than the tragedy. it seemed to peculiarly imply that the incident is more tragic merely because the guy belonged to lums. his age, work status or other history seemed to be less important than the fact tht he was a lums graduate. i am sorry but such tag lines in my opinion create a subliminal discrimination in the mind of the readers putting the life of some on a higher pedestal than the others! i may be wrong but the title of the write up did wake up my "concern" germs!
Hope he recovers soon! I can imagine what her family is going through right now/ But just wanted to raise 2 points
@ average 10 people become victims to target killings but media rarely mentions eye witnesses, motives let alone deceased education, birth place, siblings, job etc. WHY? i guess the answer is they are too poor to be given so much importance It was just yesterday when Karachiites witnessed the farce of PEACE Rally in the same vicinity by the people who claim to have biggest stake in the city, Would such incidents make the residents fear for their area becoming a political playground which normally leads to a brutal political turf war? Those who are the witness of Shoaib Suddle led Operation back in 1995-96 must be craving for something like that right now@ Sana,
Prayers are working then.
my brother in law,is out of danger now but still hospitalized
I pray for him, perhaps we can establish Pakistan Crime Fund and start building it up. Get memberships from the pooor, uneducated, eddicted, unemployed, unethical, corrupt, shameless Pakistani criminals by asking them to withdraw money every month from specialised income distribution program from criminals.
2013 and onwards are more inflation inclinced years for Pakistan. (In a country where ex-ogra chairman hides in governor house for protection and then runs to islamabad from motorway) people like Bawany have no dignity of life, no social protection in a city governed by three crime based mafias of political parties.
Publish it ET. Don't be afraid.
I pray for his quick recovery and retrun to his family
The crime in Karachi is increasing at a very alarming rate and if you look around atleast 70-80% of people we know have been victim of some or the other incident. This seems to increasing with police or govt. totally ineffective. I myself have had my car snatched 3 days ago from DHA phase V and i am still traumatized and shaken.
i think its time al DHA and clifton residents should wakeup and play an active role in presurizing DHA and clifton cantonement to take soe measures for the security of its residents. It seems that they have given a free hand to cuprits.
May Allah Almighty give this guy health and complete recovery. Amen
May Allah give him health!!
he shouldnt have left lahore!this guy is my brothers friend!i am going to karachi in two days!!GOD HELP MEEE!!!
@sgrr: Fear is the best way to regulate a being. Humans can be put to fear of punishment by authorities and so can be regulated from possible social misconduct. But the best form of fear, and very interestingly the only form that is rewarded for, is the fear of God. Which can stop a human from misconduct even in loneliness in deserts and jungles. The case here is that every person in Pakistan including the authorities has lost the fear of a Supreme Being (and I am assertive of this idea because of the religious demography of this region).
Now, when I said that we have to stand up for peace, I was trying to seed the idea of standing up to instill the fear of God within ourselves, which unfortunately the traditional Muslim clerics have failed to do, in fact, they have contributed for the opposite.
@Morons: I am in complete favor of standing against these dacoits, refer my earlier comments. I am in favor of on the spot punishment like we did in Ranchhore lane, dacoits were put on fire on the spot; robbers were killed in Sialkot subrubs on the spot and in the last robber was killed by LEA at Clifton. But all in these cases our civil society says its brutality, never consider the countless families of persons who were killed by these dacoits all around Pakistan especially in Karachi. But I could not recall where any of the dacoits got punishment by our legal system. One interesting note, if some one refer the news papers after the live burnt case of Ranchhore line, there was a drastic reduction in street crime during the week followed by the incident.
Tribune, why you put Lums in that. Lums graduate life is more important than others or less?
@ SS For several years Karachi was under army control during Zia's martial exactly when the law and order worsened. Pl do not allow your personal views to colour your judgment.
@faraz: It is the best degree in its field in Pakistan. Whether you believe it or not for whatever reason, job market does and that matters more than what you think.
The point ET was trying to make it is even with education from one of the best institutes in Pakistan, you're not safe, you're just anybody to these thugs.
@Omair: I completely agree with what you are saying. All life is sacred and important - please note I wrote "seemingly insignificant." I am not saying that the political party workers and the poor people's deaths are any less important. The point I was trying to make is that most of us usually ignore such deaths because we tend to think that the circles we move in is safe and only those who are out there fall victims to such tragedies. However, this is not true. No one is safe. It can happen to any one of us, which means we have to stop living in this bubble of safety that we think is around it. It is as fragile as the soap bubbles that children play with. One pop and it's gone, you are exposed, and a target of a bullet. This shooting incident should serve as a way for us to wake up and realize that it is not only "others" who are being targeted, but also "us." It would be useful to consider the following poem by Martin Niemoller and interpret it in our context:
same spot i was looted with my two friends on gun point, they took all our belongings :@ CLIFTON has become most dangerous place now. Police is of no use. We went to police station and they were laughing at us.
@sgrr: You missed the caption of the photograph. But what good will it do by avoiding it? The whole of Karachi is a potential hit-point, so you/we better stand up against this barbaric system. Peace is not an easy thing to achieve friend.
Karachi is the city where the Founder of the Nation has been laid to rest and look what is happening in the Quaid's City?
Whose responsibility is to control the law and order situation?
Off-course, the Police is not responsible in any way when most of the police officials are deputed on security duty of VIP's instead of general public.
ab tou Cafe's bhi safe nahi bhai.. :( pata nahi kya hoga Pakistan ka .Allah kheir keray !!
This is an utterly sad incident. The blog related to this news item mentions some personal stories, which seems to be centering on clifton and phase 8 areas. In spite of heavy police presence, such incidence seem to be occurring without a pause. The obvious would be avoid such locations- but then no place seem to be safe in this city. Sad, extremely sad.
I don’t understand why the headline had to mention LUMS graduate given that he has graduated and is now working for KESC.
Omair Khan - That's because if they had mentioned, a father of (n) children shot in the chest, the audience would skip it as the life of the 'usual' victims carries no value. Shooting a LUMS student is a global tragedy.
Why rob when you can extort.
Bawany has been my junior collegue for several years during my long service with a renowned company in Karachi.
A gem of a person . So well educated, refined and capable professional.
May Allah bless him with speedy recovery and a perfectly healthy life thereafter.
@khalid Pathan: I agree with you Khalid. Karachi has become the Safe Heaven for all the Criminals of Pakistan. Sindh & federal Govt are toothless and can not control the situation. before something really serious happens...Karachi should be handed over to the Pakistan Army for 6 months to clean up the mess and seal the exit and Entry points of the ONLY COMMERCIAL CITY of Pakistan.
@Bisharat: You say "All these shootings and death we hear about in Karachi all the time are not just the seemingly insignificant people, like political party workers or the poor" as if their deaths mean nothing. Any human life that is lost is important. We shouldnt be taking action against it because now the so-called "elite class" is now becoming victims of these barbaric activities. We should be taking action for ALL civilians. We have reached this point because we never cared when the "seemingly insignificant people" were being shot left and right like some dirty sewage insects because we were enjoying the security of our safe havens. Human life is sacred no matter the background of the person. I quite disagree with your summation of our basis for action, though I quite agree with the other part. Something needs to be done. And soon!
Looting, attempting to loot, snatch valet and mobile telephones and killing someone on mere suspicion or on resistance due to reflex action has become a routine in Karachi. It seems that not only killer gangs of political and religious factions/parties are involved but also criminals from all over Pakistan have converged into this city. It is very difficult to stop such crimes when corruption in law enforcement agencies is endemic and a majority of people consciously or unconsciously have sympathy with terrorists if it is done in the garb of religion.
Society needs to rise up against this or else none of you are safe, none of your family no one. Corruption needs to end. Feudalism needs to go. Our borders need protection.
ET treats LUMS degree as a Nobel prize
Gun ownership should be made mandatory in Pakistan, the police is 100 years away from being capable of protecting us.
Why the name of cafe is not given so that people may avoid to go there in future to save their lives.
@supressed, opressed, dep Your frustration is understandable because of the enormity and senselessness of the tragedy (I hope he will recover and it will no longer be a tragedy). But spare a thought for how this society treats the poor. A number of young people with potential become 'illiterate thugs' because they have no opportunity for education and to participate in economic activities. They easily join the mafia. We create thugs. Of course, that does not mean that such conduct can be condoned or go unpunished. I am talking about a society's inability to provide opportunities and prevent this from hapenning. I say society not government because we should not expect any good from government.
Know Bawany, such a sweet person. Its times like these that we feel we are so helpless as a nation. May Allah give Bawany a speedy recovery
The Pakistan govt needs to answer to the innocent people of Pakistan
What is the plan finally ? To turn Pakistan into Somalia
Pakistani people need to vote for Imran Khan, a great man who has given his life for his country and will do whatver it takes to improve the nation
@Omair Khan:
Cheap tactics by media to get attention omair....
I have been mugged at gun point only last week....and I really know how it feels like...I even tried to run my car over those b*** but they escaped!! We need to seriously react on these things or else this city will become unlivible!!

Such a qualified professional fighting for his life because an illiterate thug shot at him.
Bawany has been my junior collegue for several years in a reputable company, I have worked for more than twenty years.
A gem of person. So refined , well educated , and talented .
May Allah bless him with speedy recovery, and a healthy life thereafter.
@Omair Khan LUMS mentioned to make the news more 'media-worthy' ET journalism at its best!
His is a batch 7 GIKIAN as well. Gem of a guy. May Allah give him complete recovery. Ameen. Special request for prayers plz. Simply unbelievable and scary to see this happening at such popular places. Nowhere safe now.
Probably because they want us to know that no one is safe. All these shootings and death we hear about in Karachi all the time are not just the seemingly insignificant people, like political party workers or the poor. That even educated, well-to-do people from the high/middle-high society are also victims of the senseless and erratic violence that has become Karachi's staple. That no place, not even restaurants and cafes that are frequented by the so-called elites are safe anymore. It is time that we all wake up and do something about this, before graduates from IBA, CBM, SZABIST, GIKI, Hamdard, FAST, and NUST all start getting shot. May Allah help us and protect us all.
AB is one gem of a guy and quite undeserving of this mishap. May Allah help him recover and lead a super-healthy life
I don't understand why the headline had to mention LUMS graduate given that he has graduated and is now working for KESC.
May Allah have mercy on his kids and grant him healthy life,,and keep us all safe Ameen!
We have turned into a nation of ruthless barbarians.
@sgrr: Media? I think you posted your comment on a media or if you are calling for some other media?
Certainly, the victim if survived, will say in the court that he is unable to identify the person arrested by the police. Everyone in Pakistan knows the reason. And if the police or any one else killed the dacoit at the spot all our socalled civil society and media will stand up and cry for the dacoit's rights. Can anyone give me an example where any accused of street crime get the punishmen from the court. WHERE IS THE CIVIL SOCIETY/MEDIA NOW??
I know him as I have worked with him. One gem of a guy. May Allah keep him safe.
pray allah that he recovers fast......ameen!!!!!!
