A training session on first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the line staff of power distribution companies was held at Rescue 1122 training school, Rawalpindi on Friday.

The session was organised by the power distribution programme of USAID and attended by linemen safety trainers from all nine DISCOs of Pakistan, said a press release.

Robert Dalton, USAID’s Linemen Training Expert, said that accidents in power distribution companies claimed over 100 lives in 2010-11 and injured an equal number of people.

“Statistics present a grim picture with no signs of reduction in such accidents,” he said, adding that 90% of the accidents took place due to failure on the part of workmen and those in authority to observe safety rules and adopt safety practices.

USAID has so far trained over 500 linemen and pledged to implement a number of assistance programmes, including institutional improvement of power companies through capacity building and trainings in all functional areas.
