BAHAWALPUR:

The Lahore High Court Bahawalpur bench on Thursday issued stay orders against the Rahim Yar Khan Chamber of Commerce and Industry elections for the posts of president and vice president.

The judge also ordered the chamber administration to submit a report on October 16 about the eligibility of voters and recent cancellation of some memberships by the chamber’s secretary.

The orders were issued on a petition filed by executive members Shoukat Hayat and Chaudhry Jahanzeb, who said that according to the rules of the Directorate General of Trade Organisation (DGTO), a member of the chamber of commerce and industry can vote when he has completed two years as a member and is a registered tax payer.

Following the rules, they said, chamber’s Secretary General Naseer Tariq disqualified the current president, Muzaffar Saleem Chaudhry, executive member Yasmeen and some other members. Hence, he said, these members must be barred from voting in the elections.

They said that the chamber’s administrative executive committee was not accepting the disqualification of these members, so it could maintain its majority. The petitioners said this was a violation of the DGTO rules.

They requested the bench to issue a stay order to stop the elections scheduled for Friday (today).
