LAHORE:

A couple who ran a maternity clinic in Gujranwala had their bail pleas in a murder case rejected on Thursday after it emerged that they were not doctors.

Ghazala and Malik Abdul Rasheed had been on interim bail in the case, in which they are accused of murder in connection with the death of a woman and her baby during delivery.

Complainant Muhammad Anwar had told the Kot Laddha police that his wife Samina and their newborn died at the maternity clinic due to the negligence and lack of professionalism of the accused.

The investigation officer (IO) in the case told the Lahore High Court on Thursday that a Health Department team had conducted an inquiry and found that neither was licensed as a doctor.

Ghazala was a qualified midwife and Malik a health technician, but they had posed as doctors at their clinic, he said.

The investigation officer said that six other cases of manslaughter had been registered against the couple under Section 322 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

He presented the record of the six cases to the judge and asked that the couple’s interim bail be cancelled.

The Lahore High Court rejected the bail pleas and the police arrested Ghazala and Malik from the courtroom.
